Chapter 10 - The Garden of the Nameless

The cemetery in Richmond was quiet, the ancient oaks casting long, cool shadows over the green lawns.

Near the back of the property, far from the grand, polished mausoleums of the city’s wealthy families, sat a small, simple grave.

The old mahogany casket had been exhumed months ago. Clara Higgins had been returned to her family in West Virginia, buried under a headstone with her own name, surrounded by her loved ones.

But the grave site remained.

Ethan and Evelyn had purchased the plot, but they had replaced the grand Vance family headstone with a simple monument of rough-cut mountain stone, brought down from Blackwood Ridge.

On the stone, a new inscription had been carved:

IN MEMORY OF ALL THOSE WHO WERE FORGOTTEN IN THE SHADOWS OF GREED.

THE LIGHT ALWAYS FINDS THE TRUTH.

Ethan knelt by the stone, placing a fresh bunch of wild roses at its base.

Beside him, Evelyn stood tall, her grey hair catching the warm afternoon sunlight. She looked down at the flowers, then up at the clear blue sky.

"Do you think he’s looking down at us, Ethan?" she asked quietly. "Your father."

"If he is," Ethan said, standing up and wrapping his arm around his mother’s shoulders, "I hope he’s seeing that everything he tried to destroy—our name, our family, our souls—is finally whole."

They stood together in the quiet cemetery, the wind whispering through the oak leaves, a gentle, peaceful sound. The heavy burden of the past had finally been laid to rest, and for the first time in twenty years, they were both truly free.
