Chapter 8 - The Falling House of Cards

The federal building in downtown Richmond was a stark, modern structure of concrete and glass, a sharp contrast to the damp, ancient pine woods of the ridge.
Three days had passed since the night at the cabin.
The news had already broken, and the scandal was tearing through the state like a wildfire. The headlines were relentless: "Vance Group Built on Murder and Deceit," "Mogul's Wife Found Alive After 20 Years," "The Secret in the Sealed Casket."
Ethan sat in a secure conference room, flanked by two federal prosecutors and a team of investigators from the FBI’s white-collar crime division. Beside him sat his mother, Evelyn, looking elegant despite her simple clothes, her posture upright and proud.
On the table lay the original documents from the Washington safe deposit box: bank routing numbers, altered police reports, and a recorded confession from a dying coroner who had admitted to falsifying Jane Doe’s death certificate in 2006.
"Mr. Vance," the lead prosecutor, a sharp-eyed woman named Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Jenkins, said as she closed her laptop. "Your cooperation has been exemplary. By turning over the entire corporate registry, the off-shore accounts, and the internal memos, you have given us everything we need to dismantle the Vance Group’s criminal legacy."
"I don't care about the company," Ethan said, his voice tired but clear. "I just want the truth to be recorded. I want the people of Blackwood Ridge to get their land back. And I want the family of Jane Doe to know where she is."
"We’ve already identified her," Agent Jenkins said softly. "Her name was Clara Higgins. She was nineteen when she died. Her sister has been searching for her for twenty years. Because of you, she will finally be able to bring her home."
Ethan felt a tear slip down his cheek, but this time, he didn't wipe it away. He didn't care about his father's rules anymore.
"What about my wife?" Ethan asked.
"Vanessa Vance has been charged with conspiracy and obstruction of justice," Jenkins replied. "Her lawyers are trying to negotiate a plea deal, but her attempts to buy off Grier and suppress the evidence were recorded on the cabin's trail-cams that the local community had set up. She will serve time, Ethan."
Ethan nodded slowly. He felt a pang of sadness for the woman he had married, but he knew she had chosen her path. She had chosen the money over the truth, just as his father had.
"And Grier?"

"Thomas Grier is talking," Jenkins smiled coldly. "With a bullet wound and a mountain of federal charges, he’s trying to avoid the death penalty. He’s implicating every corrupt politician, judge, and cop that Richard Vance ever bought. This is going to clean out half of Richmond's elite."
Evelyn reached over and squeezed Ethan’s hand. "It’s over, Ethan. The foundation is gone. But we can build something real now."
