Chapter 5 - SHADOW OPERATIONS
Despite the arrests of Greg and Laura, the threat had not vanished entirely. Cyber forensics revealed that the buyer on the other end of the $250,000 transaction—a shadowy syndicate operating out of Eastern Europe known as the "Vasiliev Group"—had already disbursed half of the payment and was expecting delivery of the infant within forty-eight hours.
At police headquarters, a joint task force involving the FBI’s Human Trafficking Division took over the operation. Special Agent Sarah Reyes joined Detective Vance and Officer Torres to coordinate protective protocols for Hannah.
“These networks don't cut their losses easily,” Agent Reyes explained during a briefing, projection screens showing photographs of known associates of the syndicate. “They’ve paid $125,000 upfront. If Greg Miller fails to deliver, they will try to collect their asset directly or eliminate anyone who can testify against their financial channels.”
“Hannah is heavily guarded on the fourth floor of Riverside Hospital,” Rachel pointed out. “We have officers stationed at every stairwell and elevator bank.”
“Hospital security is porous by nature,” Reyes countered. “Too many staff members, too many vendor deliveries, too many shifts changing. We need to move her to a secure federal facility, but her medical condition makes transport risky.”
The doctor overseeing Hannah’s care confirmed the danger: Hannah was showing early signs of pre-eclampsia brought on by the high stress and the lingering effects of the sedatives she had been forced to ingest. Moving her long distances could trigger immediate, dangerous labor.
“She stays at Riverside,” Vance decided. “We turn the entire high-risk maternity ward into a fortress.”
Meanwhile, Megan Shaw was back at work at the 911 dispatch center, but her mind remained anchored to Hannah’s case. As she monitored incoming regional emergency traffic, a strange ping appeared on her console—a series of rapid, automated location requests querying the emergency dispatch database for Riverside Methodist Hospital’s internal floor plans and utility grids.
Megan’s training immediately kicked in. Realizing someone was attempting to gather tactical intelligence on the hospital’s infrastructure through compromised municipal credentials, she flagged the IP address and contacted Officer Torres directly.
“Rachel, someone is probing the hospital system from an external server,” Megan reported over a secure line. “They just downloaded the electrical routing schematics for the maternity wing.”
“They’re going to kill the power,” Rachel realized instantly.

“I’m routing a trace through our cyber unit right now,” Megan said, her fingers flying across her keyboard. “The connection is bouncing off local cell towers near the hospital parking garage. Whoever is doing this is already on site!”
Rachel pulled her sidearm from her holster, turning to the officers stationed beside her in the hospital corridor. “Red alert! Lock down all entrances to the floor now!”
