Chapter 6 - THE VANISHING ACT

The lights inside Riverside Methodist Hospital suddenly flickered and died.
A low groan echoed through the building as emergency backup generators kicked in four seconds later, casting the hallways in an eerie, dimmed red light. Electronic door locks clicked off momentarily during the power transition, opening a window of vulnerability.
In the confusion, two men dressed in paramedic uniforms slipped through the service elevator doors on the fourth floor, pulling heavy duffel bags behind them.
Inside Hannah’s private room, the fetal heart monitor beeped erratically as the battery backup took over. Hannah sat up in panic, clutching her belly as a sharp, agonizing contraction rippled through her lower abdomen.
“Rachel!” she called out, her voice tight with pain.
Rachel slammed the reinforced door shut, deadbolting it from the inside while Agent Reyes drew her weapon, taking a tactical position near the window.
Outside in the corridor, gunshots echoed—muffled by suppressors. The stationed police officers engaged the intruders in a violent, sudden firefight.
“They’re on the floor!” Reyes yelled into her radio. “Tactical team, execute Plan B! We have armed hostiles on four!”
The door handle of Hannah’s room rattled violently. A heavy kick smashed against the lock, splintering the frame.
Rachel raised her weapon, aiming directly at the center of the wooden door. “Stay back, Hannah! Get down on the floor behind the bed!”
The door burst open, revealing a tall, muscular man wearing tactical gear under an unzipped medical coat. Before he could raise his weapon, Rachel fired two rounds into his center chest plate, knocking him backward into the corridor.
Agent Reyes stepped forward, providing suppressing fire while pushing the second attacker back toward the stairwell doors.
Within three minutes, police backup units flooded the hallway, neutralizing the remaining intruder and securing the floor completely. But the physical strain of the raid had pushed Hannah over the edge.
She collapsed onto her side on the hospital bed, weeping from intense, uncontrollable pain.
The charge nurse rushed into the room, checking her vitals frantically. “Her waters have broken! She’s in full labor, and her blood pressure is hitting dangerous levels!”
“We can’t move her to the delivery room!” Vance shouted over the chaos. “Deliver the baby here!”
Rachel re-holstered her weapon, her gloves stained with dust from the shattered door frame, and ran to Hannah’s side. She grabbed Hannah’s hand, holding it with both of her own.

“Listen to me, Hannah,” Rachel said, her voice firm and grounded amidst the surrounding storm. “You survived that locked room. You survived your mother and Greg. You survived tonight. You are strong enough to bring this baby into the world right now!”
Hannah looked into Rachel’s eyes, finding a anchor of absolute certainty. She nodded through her tears, squeezing Rachel’s hand as the medical team rushed into position.
