Chapter 4 - The Locks Are Changed

At 3:00 p.m., the family court judge signed every single emergency motion Rachel Sterling submitted.

The order granted me temporary sole legal and physical custody of Milo and Ava, issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting Ryan and Elaine from coming within 1,000 feet of me or the children, and granted me exclusive use and possession of our suburban house in Madison.

Armed with the court order, two uniformed sheriff's deputies, and a locksmith David had hired, I drove home for the first time in thirty-six hours.

The suburban neighborhood was quiet. Ryan’s SUV was parked in the driveway beside Elaine’s sedan. As my car pulled up to the curb, the front curtain twitched.

I stepped out of the vehicle, flanked by Deputy Miller and Deputy Walsh. David walked behind us, carrying a thick accordion folder of legal documents.

Before I even reached the porch, the front door swung open. Ryan stepped out, wearing a rumpled dress shirt, his hair messy, his eyes bloodshot. He looked like a man who hadn't slept, but his posture was still rigid with defensive anger.

“Claire!” Ryan shouted, walking down the front steps. “What is the meaning of this?! Why aren't you at the hospital with Milo?! Who are these officers?!”

“Mr. Donovan, step back,” Deputy Miller instructed calmly, placing a hand on his belt. “We are here to execute an emergency court order signed by Judge Holbrook.”

Ryan stopped in his tracks, his eyes darting between the deputies and me. “A court order? For what? Claire, have you completely lost your mind?! I’ve been trying to call you for ten hours! My mother is sitting in a jail cell because of your ridiculous accusations!”

“Your mother is in a jail cell because she poisoned our son with deadly nightshade, Ryan!” I said, my voice steady, ringing clearly out across the manicured lawns of our quiet street.

“It was an accident!” Ryan yelled, throwing his hands in the air. “She mixed up the bottles in her purse! She’s an old woman! She was trying to help because you were running around hyperventilating over a simple childhood fever!”

I looked at him, feeling a sudden, breathtaking wave of revulsion. There was no grief in his voice for Milo. There was no concern for Ava’s trauma. There was only his desperate, pathetic need to protect his mother’s ego and preserve his own pride.

David stepped forward, handing a certified copy of the order to Ryan. “You have thirty minutes to collect your personal clothing and toilet items, Ryan. You are barred from this property. If you step foot on this lawn after thirty minutes, these deputies will arrest you for violation of a protective order.”

Ryan scanned the document, his face turning from pale white to a deep, ugly crimson. “You can’t kick me out of my own house! My name is on the deed!”

“The house was purchased using a seventy percent down payment from Claire’s personal inheritance trust from her grandmother,” David corrected coldly. “And under Wisconsin family law, exclusive possession of the marital home is granted to the custodial parent when child endangerment has occurred. Read page three, Ryan. You’re done here.”

From inside the house, the locksmith stepped past Ryan and began removing the front door deadbolt, his power drill whirring loudly in the quiet afternoon air.

Ryan looked at the locksmith, then at the deputies, and finally at me. The arrogant, dismissive husband who had spent six weeks telling me I was crazy, overly anxious, and incompetent was suddenly shrinking before my eyes.

“Claire... please,” Ryan stammered, his tone suddenly shifting to a desperate, wheedling whine. “We can talk about this. Don't do this to us. My mother... she’s frail. She can’t handle jail. If you drop the charges and lift the restraining order, we can go to counseling. We can fix this.”

I stood my ground, my arms folded tightly across my chest, looking at the man I had spent eight years loving, realizing I had been married to a ghost.

“You chose her, Ryan,” I said softly, every word weighted with iron. “Every time she insulted me, you chose her. Every time she undermined my parenting, you chose her. And when she gave poison to our baby, you chose her again. You have twenty-five minutes left to get your clothes.”

I turned my back on him and walked toward the locksmith, leaving Ryan standing on the driveway, surrounded by police officers, watching his world fall apart.
