Chapter 9 - The Final Severance

Two months after Elaine’s trial, the civil proceedings for my divorce from Ryan Donovan were finalized.

We sat in a small conference room at the family courthouse. Ryan sat across from me with his new attorney. He looked broken, having resigned from his corporate job after the public scandal and moved into a small, rented apartment outside the city.

Under the final divorce decree signed by the judge:

I was granted Sole Legal and Sole Physical Custody of both Milo and Ava.

Ryan was granted Supervised Visitation Only—two hours every other Saturday at a court-monitored facility, contingent upon him completing two years of mandatory psychological counseling and parenting classes.

I was awarded full ownership of our suburban home, full retention of my pre-marital inheritance, and monthly child support payments.

Ryan signed the final pages of the divorce decree with a shaking hand. He pushed the papers across the table toward me.

“Claire,” Ryan said softly, his voice hollow, his eyes red. “I... I sold my car to pay off the remaining legal fees. I’m starting therapy next week.”

I signed my name neatly on the final line, setting the pen down. “I hope therapy helps you, Ryan. Truly.”

“Do you think... do you think someday, years from now, you could ever forgive me?” Ryan asked, his eyes desperate for a sliver of hope. “For not protecting our kids? For not believing you?”

I looked at him—the man I had once shared a bed with, the man whose children I had borne. I felt no rage anymore. I felt no bitterness. The fire of the trauma had burned all of that away, leaving behind only clarity.

“Forgiveness isn't about giving you back your old life, Ryan,” I said gently, picking up my copy of the decree. “Forgiveness is me choosing not to carry your failures on my shoulders anymore. You have a long road ahead of you to prove to Ava and Milo that you can be a safe father. Focus on that.”

I stood up, zipped my leather portfolio, and walked out of the conference room without looking back.
