Chapter 7 - Reunions in the Light

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds over Ohio, casting long, golden rays of light across the glass façade of St. Jude’s Medical Center.

In room 408 of the Special Care Pavilion, the air was warm and quiet.

Wren—now officially restored on her medical records as Elena Vance—lay in a comfortable hospital bed. She was dressed in clean pink hospital gowns, her hair washed and brushed, her blood pressure fully normalized thanks to IV medications and rest.

Beside her bed sat a transparent bassinet. Inside it, her newborn daughter lay sleeping peacefully under a warm blue blanket, wearing a tiny knit cap.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Rowan Hale, dressed in clean scrubs with a bandage over her temple, stepped gently into the room, followed by Dax and Kira.

"Hey, champion," Rowan smiled softly. "How are you feeling?"

"Rowan!" Elena’s face lit up with a brilliant, gorgeous smile. "Come in, please!"

As the three paramedics gathered around the bed, the door opened further, and an older man stepped into the room.

He was in his early sixties, with silver-gray hair, a tall, slightly stooped frame, and deep lines around his eyes that spoke of two decades of endless, unyielding grief. He wore a simple brown leather jacket, and his hands were trembling as he held a small, worn photograph in a silver frame.

Thomas Vance stopped near the foot of the bed. He stared at Elena, his breath catching in his throat, his chest heaving as tears welled up in his tired eyes.

"Elena?" he whispered, his voice cracking with immense emotion.

Elena looked at the man. In his features, she saw her own nose, her own dark, expressive eyes, her own soul reflecting back at her.

"Dad?" Elena whispered softly.

Thomas dropped his coat to the floor, rushed to the side of the bed, and pulled his long-lost daughter into a fierce, weeping embrace.

"My baby... my little girl..." Thomas sobbed openly, burying his face into her shoulder, clutching her like a man who had finally reached land after twenty years at sea. "I searched for you every single day... I never stopped looking for you, Elena... never..."

"I know," Elena cried softly, wrapping her arms tightly around her father’s neck. "I know, Dad. I'm home."

Rowan, Dax, and Kira stood quietly near the window, holding each other’s hands, wiping away their own tears as they witnessed the miracle unfolding before them.

After several long minutes, Thomas pulled back, wiping his wet eyes, and looked down into the bassinet beside the bed.

He reached out one large, calloused hand, gently stroking the soft cheek of his newborn granddaughter.

"She’s beautiful, Elena," Thomas smiled through his tears. "She looks just like your mother did."

May you like

"I named her," Elena said, reaching out to touch Rowan’s hand. "Her name is Hope Rowan Vance."

Rowan looked at Elena, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep and profound it rendered her speechless.
