Chapter 9 - The Legacy of Station 43

Six months later, summer had returned to the rolling green hills outside the city limits.

Station 43 was bathed in warm afternoon sunlight. The big red bay doors were open, and the sweet smell of blooming wildflowers drifted through the air.

In the driveway in front of the station, a large backyard barbecue had been set up. Long wooden tables were laden with food, lemonade, and flowers.

Members of the county fire department, local sheriff's deputies, hospital staff, and community members gathered together to celebrate a special occasion.

Dr. Audra Kline, the chief of emergency medicine at St. Jude’s, stood beside Thomas Vance, chatting happily as they watched tiny baby Hope—now seven months old, healthy, chubby-cheeked, and sitting up on a blanket on the lawn—giggle as Kira Salazar dangled a plush teddy bear in front of her.

Dax Monroe sat on a folding chair nearby, holding his own baby daughter on his knee, laughing as Dax's wife chatted with Elena.

Rowan Hale stood near the front of the ambulance, holding a cold cup of iced tea, watching the scene with a quiet, deep sense of peace in her heart.

Thomas Vance walked over to Rowan, carrying two glasses of fresh lemonade. He handed one to her with a warm, genuine smile.

"How are you holding up, Rowan?" Thomas asked softly.

"I’m good, Thomas," Rowan smiled back, taking a sip. "Really good. It’s a nice day."

"I brought something for you," Thomas said, pulling a long velvet box from his jacket pocket and handing it to her. "From Elena and me."

Rowan opened the box. Inside lay a customized gold medal attached to a blue ribbon. Engraved on the back were the words:

To Rowan Hale & The Crew of Medic 43

For stepping into the dark, bringing back our daughter, and protecting hope.

— The Vance Family

Rowan traced her finger over the raised gold lettering, her eyes glistening with tears. "Thomas... this is too much."

"It’s not enough," Thomas said, his voice deep with emotion. "You gave me my life back, Rowan. You gave my daughter her freedom, and you gave my granddaughter her future. There isn't a medal in the world that can repay that."

Elena walked over, holding baby Hope in her arms. She looked beautiful, her dark hair shining in the sun, her eyes full of health, vitality, and joy. She had recently enrolled in the local college, pursuing a degree in social work to help other victims of trauma and abduction.

"Rowan," Elena said softly, stepping close and placing baby Hope gently into Rowan’s arms.

Rowan held the seven-month-old girl, who cooed happily, reaching her tiny, soft fingers up to touch the shiny gold badge pinned to Rowan’s uniform shirt.

"Look at her, Rowan," Elena whispered, smiling through her tears. "She’s growing so fast."

"She’s strong," Rowan said, holding the child close, feeling the warm, steady heartbeat against her chest. "Just like her mother."
