Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Silver

The sterile smell of St. Mary’s Hospital felt like a chokehold. The silver key, cold and biting against my palm, left a faint, metallic smear of blood on my skin. I stared at the engraved crest—the crowned wolf beneath three stars. It was a ghost I thought I had buried twenty years ago in the concrete foundations of New York. The Bellaforte family. The syndicates called them the "Shadow Sovereigns" before my father’s death shattered the old alliance and forced them into exile across the Atlantic.
"Boss," Marco whispered, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the polished linoleum floor. His hand instinctively rested on the lapel of his tailored coat, concealing the heavy weight of his Glock. "The Bellaforte haven't set foot in the tri-state area since the bridge execution. If that stranger brought their crest here, this isn't a random hit. Elena wasn't collateral damage. She was the bait."
"She isn't bait, Marco," I said, my voice dropping into a register so cold the nearby nurse visibly shivered. "She’s the one boundary they should have never crossed. If they wanted a war with the Morelli empire, they could have come to my docks. They could have targeted my vaults. But they touched a woman who bleeds for children. They touched the only pure thing left in this city."
I turned to the surgeon, whose hands were still damp from the scrub sink. "Is she stable?"
"The abdominal wound missed the hepatic artery by millimeters, Mr. Morelli," the doctor replied, wiping sweat from his brow. "We’ve induced a medical coma to allow the tissue to heal. She won't be awake for at least forty-eight hours. But the man... the stranger who took the three rounds for her... he’s a different story. One bullet is lodged near his spine. He’s fighting, but his vitals are dropping."
"Take me to him," I ordered.
"Sir, the ICU is restricted—"
Marco stepped forward, his cold, gray eyes fixing on the doctor’s face. "The boss said take him to him."
The surgeon swallowed hard and nodded, gesturing down the dim, quiet corridor of the surgical intensive care unit.
The stranger lay beneath a web of clear plastic tubes, the rhythmic, electronic beep of the heart monitor the only sign of life in the glass-walled cubicle. He was a young man, barely in his late twenties, with sharp, Mediterranean features and a jagged, old scar running from his jawline down into his collar. Despite the hospital gown, I could see the heavy, dark ink of a tattoo covering his right shoulder.
I stepped closer, flashing my tactical light onto his skin.
My breath caught. It wasn't just a tattoo. It was a branding mark. A sequence of five numerical digits burned into the skin right beneath the Bellaforte crowned wolf. 09-442.
"A vault guardian," Marco breathed, leaning over the glass partition. "The Bellaforte private bank in Palermo. They brand their couriers like livestock to ensure absolute loyalty. If a guardian came to New York carrying a master key, he didn't run away from the family, Luca. He was sent by someone at the very top."
Suddenly, the stranger’s eyes flew open. They were bloodshot, wild with panic, rolling back in his head before fixing onto my face. His hand violently twitched against the restraints, his fingers clawing at the air toward the pocket where I had placed the silver key.
"Morelli..." the man choked out, a thick spray of crimson staining the transparent oxygen mask over his face. "The... the ledger... beneath the bridge... it wasn't... it wasn't your father who broke the contract..."
"Who sent you?" I demanded, grabbing his trembling hand. "Who ordered the hit on Elena?"
The stranger’s grip tightened on my wrist with a terrifying, dying strength. His jaw locked, his teeth red with internal bleeding. "The wolf... has two heads... Luca... Beware the... the brother..."

The heart monitor gave a long, flat, agonizing drone.
The stranger’s eyes rolled back, his grip slackening until his hand dropped lifelessly onto the white sheets. The nurses rushed into the room, pushing me back, but I already knew it was over. The courier was dead. He had crossed an ocean to give me a key, protect a woman he didn't know, and leave me with a riddle that threatened to burn my entire empire to the ground.
