Chapter 7 - The Sovereign Vault

The subterranean chapel of Monreale was a breathtaking monument to old-world wealth. The walls were covered in golden Byzantine mosaics, the image of a massive Christ Pantocrator looking down from the domed ceiling over a floor of pristine white marble. In the center of the altar stood a massive, solid bronze sarcophagus—but it wasn't a tomb.

Vittorio stepped up to the side of the bronze monument, pressing a hidden lever disguised as a decorative stone angel. With a heavy, grinding sound of old counterweights, the entire sarcophagus slid to the left, revealing a high-tech, stainless-steel vault door built right into the limestone bedrock.

"This is it," Vittorio said, his voice echoing through the silent chapel. "The Sovereign Vault of the Bellaforte family."

The vault interface was modern, installed in the late nineties—a dual-lock system requiring a numerical matrix, a biometric print, and the silver master key.

I stepped back, keeping my rifle trained on the stone steps leading down into the chapel, while Marco set up a perimeter defense with two claymore mines near the entrance.

"Elena," I said, helping the doctors assist her to a standing position. She was weak, leaning heavily against my chest, her face pale with the exertion. "I need you to press your hand against the glass scanner. It’s the only way to lock the system down against Lorenzo’s remote access."

She looked at me, her clear, honest eyes searching mine through the grime and blood of the journey. "If I do this, Luca... will the killing stop?"

"If you do this, Elena, we take away the only thing he cares about," I replied, my voice softening just for her. "We take away his throne. Without the money, he’s just a broken old man with an army he can no longer afford to pay."

She nodded, trusting me completely. She stepped toward the console, her fingers trembling as she pressed her right hand onto the green glass panel. A bright laser line swept over her palm.

BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION COMPLETE. HEIR CONFIRMED.

Vittorio stepped forward next, inserting the bloodstained silver key into the central cylinder. He turned it ninety degrees to the right.

MASTER KEY ACCEPTED. COMPLIANCE SECURED.

A deep, pneumatic hiss filled the room as the massive steel bolts retracted, the vault door swinging open to reveal stacks of historic government bonds, gold bullion, and the digital ledger keys containing the sovereign wealth fund certificates.

"We did it," Vittorio whispered, a tear sliding down his weathered cheek. "Lorenzo is finished."

"Not yet, brother," a cold, mocking voice boomed from the chapel balcony above.

I spun around, my weapon raised instantly, but my finger froze on the trigger.

Standing on the stone balcony, surrounded by six heavily armed Black Wolves mercenaries, was a man who looked exactly like Vittorio. He wore an identical three-piece suit, but his face was twisted into a malicious, arrogant sneer, and his eyes carried a psychotic light that the true Vittorio completely lacked.

And in his hand, he held a remote detonator.

"Lorenzo," Vittorio hissed, his body shaking with a forty-year-old hatred.

"You always were the sentimental fool, Vittorio," Lorenzo laughed, his voice echoing off the golden mosaics. "You thought you could sneak into my city? You thought you could use a petty Manhattan thug to steal my crown? Look up, brother."

I followed his gaze to the domed ceiling. Wired into the ancient stone columns were eight blocks of military-grade C4 explosives.

"The moment I press this button," Lorenzo said, his thumb hovering over the red switch, "the entire chapel collapses into the ravine. The girl dies, the Morelli trash dies, and the vault seals forever. If I can't have the fortune, no one will."
