Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at the Estate

The snow had begun to fall again, large, heavy flakes that covered the muddy tracks in the driveway of the Hale estate. Inside the house, the atmosphere had transformed from celebration to pure panic. Dana was frantically throwing designer clothes into a leather suitcase, while Michael stood by the window, his phone pressed to his ear.

"He's not answering, Dana!" Michael yelled, his voice cracking with rising hysteria. "The credit union manager’s phone goes straight to voicemail. The precinct desk line is blocked. Something is wrong."

"Shut up, Michael, and pack the silver!" Dana screamed back, her face contorted with rage. "Your sister did something. I told you we should have handled Eleanor out of town. Your stupid family is ruining everything!"

"My family?" Michael shouted, a sudden flash of anger breaking through his fear. "You told me this was legal! You said Mom would be taken care of in a nice facility! She was bleeding, Dana! You hit her with the iron skillet! I saw you!"

"And you stood there and watched!" Dana hissed, spinning around to face him, her eyes wild. "You're just as guilty as I am. You signed the witness lines. You took the first ten thousand from the advance deposit. If I go down, you go down for the rest of your miserable life!"

The heavy oak front door suddenly clicked and swung open.

Dana and Michael both froze, turning toward the hallway. Evelyn stepped into the foyer, flanked by two state investigators and a county sheriff’s deputy who was not under Ross's influence.

"You're both right," Evelyn said, walking into the living room. "You are both going down."

Dana recovered her composure quickly, stepping in front of her suitcase. "Evelyn, you don't have a warrant for this house. This property belongs to us. Get out before I call the State Police."

"The State Police are the ones who authorized my entry, Dana," Evelyn said calmly, gesturing to the investigators behind her. "This is an active crime scene execution. We have a search warrant for the primary computer terminals, all mobile devices, and the physical documents relating to the fraudulent title transfer of Eleanor Hale."

The county deputy stepped forward, producing two pairs of steel handcuffs. "Dana Wells, Michael Hale, you are under arrest for grand larceny, bank fraud, elder exploitation, and conspiracy to commit real estate fraud."

Michael dropped his phone, his knees buckling as he sank onto the sofa, weeping openly. "Evelyn, please... I’m your brother. Don't do this to me. I'll testify against Dana. I’ll tell them everything she did!"

Dana turned on him like a rabid animal, cursing and striking out at him before the deputy stepped in, grabbing her arms and forcing them behind her back. "Get off me! You small-town losers! You don't know who you're dealing with! My uncle will destroy all of you!"

"Your uncle is currently writing a fifty-page confession in cell number two, Dana," Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the shouting. "He traded you for his wife's immunity within ten minutes of his arrest. You're completely on your own."

As the deputy led a screaming Dana out into the snow, Evelyn walked over to Michael, who was still crying on the sofa, his hands secured behind his back. He looked up at her through his tears, begging with his eyes.

"Evelyn... please. Mom wouldn't want this. She loves me."

Evelyn looked down at him, her heart heavy but her resolve completely unbroken. "Mom loved you enough to let you live in her guest house for three years without charging you a dime when you were broke, Michael. And you repaid her by helping a monster strip her of her home and her dignity. You will face the court, you will plead guilty, and you will serve whatever time the state demands. That is the only family protection you have left from me."

She turned away, leaving the investigators to process the house, and stepped back out into the cold winter air.
