Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

That evening, as the golden sunset faded into a deep, starlit twilight, the house was filled with the warm, comforting aroma of roasted chicken and freshly baked bread.
Marcus, Lena, and Detective Ramirez gathered around the long wooden dining table, laughing and sharing stories of their work at St. Matthew’s. Eli sat at the head of the table, his puppy snoozing comfortably on a rug beneath his chair.
After dinner, Rachel walked Eli upstairs to his new bedroom.
The room was painted a soft, soothing blue, filled with books, model airplanes, and a large, comfortable bed with a thick, warm quilt.
Eli climbed under the covers, clutching a plush dog in his arms, while Rachel sat on the edge of the mattress, running her fingers gently through his dark hair.
"Mom?" Eli asked softly, his eyelids growing heavy.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Do you remember when we were at the hospital, and I was counting the minutes?"
Rachel’s heart gave a tender squeeze. "I remember, baby."
"I don't count the minutes anymore," Eli murmured, snuggling deeper into his pillow.
Rachel bent down, kissing his warm, smooth forehead, lingering there for a long moment to feel the steady, strong rhythm of his breathing.
"What do you do now instead?" she asked softly.
Eli gave a sleepy, contented sigh, his hand reaching out to squeeze her fingers tightly.
"Now I just count the days," Eli whispered, his voice drifting off into peaceful sleep. "Because every day with you is a good one."
Rachel sat in the quiet room for a long time, watching her son sleep safely in the warm light of the bedside lamp. Outside the window, the rain began to fall again—not as a cold, terrifying storm, but as a gentle, soothing lullaby against the glass.

She stood up, walked to the doorway, and looked back at her healthy, thriving child.
For the first time in years, she didn't look back over her shoulder. She turned off the hallway light, closed the door gently, and stepped forward into the bright, safe future they had fought so hard to win.
