Chapter 3 - The Fake Warrant

Inside the pediatric unit at St. Matthew’s Hospital, the overhead lights flickered once, then twice, before settling into a dull, emergency hum.
Dr. Lena Brooks was rapidly reviewing the chemical structure listed on the flash drive using a secure lab terminal when the doors to the pediatric floor hissed open.
Three men in dark suits, carrying leather side-bags and wearing official-looking brass badges pinned to their lapels, walked purposefully down the corridor. At the head of the group was a tall, sharp-featured man with slicked-back hair and a predatory composure.
"Dr. Brooks?" the man asked, his voice smooth, echoing with unearned authority.
Lena stood up from the nursing station, placing herself between the men and Eli’s room. "I’m Dr. Brooks. Who are you?"
"Special Agent Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation," the man said, flashing a dark leather badge wallet so quickly Lena could barely read the print. "We are here to take custody of Eli Carter under a federal protective order. The mother, Rachel Carter, is a high-level fugitive involved in corporate espionage and biological theft."
Marcus stepped out of Eli’s room, crossing his arms over his chest. His broad shoulders blocked the doorframe completely. "This boy is in critical condition. He isn't going anywhere without a signed order from the chief of pediatric medicine and a clearance from our legal department."
"This is a federal matter, nurse," Agent Vance snapped, his polite demeanor instantly dissolving into cold malice. "Step aside."
Lena watched the man’s eyes. They were not looking at Eli with concern, nor were they looking at Marcus with legal authority. He was scanning the room’s medical monitors, eyeing the IV line, and searching for the blue backpack.
"Your badge," Lena said quietly.
"What about it?"
"Federal badges in this district carry a seven-digit division code on the lower bronze seal," Lena said, drawing back slightly toward the wall alarm. "Yours doesn't."
The man’s hand drifted subtly beneath his dark suit jacket. "Doctor, you are interfering with a national security operation."
"And you are standing in a pediatric intensive care unit without a warrant, without hospital clearance, and without an ID that passes basic verification," Marcus added, taking a step forward. "Get off my floor before I call hospital security."
Before the man could draw his weapon, the loud, piercing blare of the hospital’s code-red alarm shattered the tension. Red lights began to rotate along the ceiling tiles.
"Code Red, Pediatric Wing! All personnel lock down!" the intercom barked.
The three men exchanged a quick, furious glance. The leader pulled a suppressed handgun from his holster, aiming it directly at Marcus’s chest. "Where is the flash drive?"
"Down here!" a voice shouted from the end of the hall.

Detective Ramirez burst through the double doors, her service weapon raised. "Drop your weapons! Federal Impersonation and Aggravated Assault! Down on the ground now!"
A volley of silenced gunshots tore through the nursing station glass, showering the hallway in crystalline shards.
