Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Purge

At 9:00 AM the following morning, the sun broke through the clouds, reflecting off the glass facade of the Vance Tower in the heart of the city’s financial district.

I stepped out of my black town car wearing a tailored charcoal suit, my right arm supported by a sleek, custom black sling that held my cast securely against my chest. Beside me walked Arthur Pendelton and two senior forensic auditors from a global accounting firm.

As I walked through the marble lobby, employees stopped and stared. News of Michael’s arrest had broken at dawn, shocking the local business community. For months, Michael had been telling investors that I was withdrawing from public life due to 'health issues,' positioning himself as the sole decision-maker of Vance Enterprises.

Today, those lies died.

I took the private executive elevator directly to the thirty-fifth floor. When the doors slid open, I walked straight toward the main boardroom where the quarterly executive committee meeting was already in progress.

Without knocking, Arthur pushed the double mahogany doors open.

Inside, eight senior board members were gathered around the long oval glass table. At the head of the table sat Richard Hayes—my late father’s former vice-president, a man who had worked at the company for over twenty years.

Richard froze mid-sentence, a stack of financial reports in his hands.

"Claire?" Richard gasped, rising quickly from his chair. "What... what are you doing here? We heard about the horrific news this morning! We were just discussing how to handle the press regarding Michael's... situation."

"Did you, Richard?" I asked, walking calmly to the head of the table. Arthur pulled out the main leather executive chair for me, and I sat down, leaning my cast against the smooth glass surface. "Or were you discussing how to quickly execute the transfer of the northern port properties before my legal team locked down the company's asset registry?"

Richard’s face flushed, a thin bead of sweat appearing on his forehead. "Claire, I don't know what you're implying! We are all deeply shocked by Michael’s actions. We had no idea he was capable of domestic violence or... or financial irregularities!"

"Save it, Richard," I said, pulling a sleek silver thumb drive from my pocket with my left hand and tossing it onto the center of the table. "Arthur, play file four."

Arthur plugged the drive into the boardroom console. The wall-mounted digital display flickered to life, showing a series of encrypted email exchanges between Richard Hayes and Michael Sterling dating back four months.

The text was undeniable: Richard had been providing Michael with confidential valuation reports, helping him draft fraudulent board resolutions, and preparing to dilute my majority shares in exchange for a twenty percent equity stake in Michael's shell corporation.

The other seven board members leaned forward, reading the screen in utter horror.

"My God, Richard," whispered Board Member Sterling, an elderly woman who had been my father's closest advisor. "You were helping him strip the company?"

"It’s a frame-up!" Richard yelled, pointing a trembling finger at me. "She forged those! She’s unstable! Look at her—her husband just got arrested, she’s wearing a cast, she’s clearly out of her mind with grief!"

I looked at Richard with pity—not because I felt bad for him, but because his defense was so pathetic.

"Richard," I said softly. "While you were busy plotting with my husband, you forgot one fundamental rule about Vance Enterprises. My father didn't just leave me sixty percent of the voting stock. He left me full, unilateral authority to terminate any executive officer for cause without board approval."

I gestured to the two forensic auditors standing by the door.

"As of 9:15 AM today, you are terminated from Vance Enterprises," I announced cleanly. "Your stock options are voided under the anti-fraud clause, your severance is canceled, and the forensic team is currently raiding your office down the hall to secure all digital and physical paper trails."

Two security guards stepped into the room, taking positions on either side of Richard.

"You can't do this!" Richard roared, slamming his fists on the table. "I built this company with your father!"

"You helped build it," I corrected him, standing up slowly. "And then you sold your loyalty to a petty thief for a promise of quick cash. Get him out of my sight."

As the guards dragged a red-faced, shouting Richard out of the boardroom, I looked around the table at the remaining seven executives. They were sitting up straighter now, their expressions a mix of awe and absolute terror.

"Now," I said, placing my left hand flat on the table. "Let’s discuss the restructuring of Vance Enterprises."
