Chapter 4 - Desperate Measures

By Tuesday morning, the pressure on the Sterling family had reached a boiling point.

Michael was being held at the county jail, his request for bail denied after Arthur presented the court with evidence that Michael had been attempting to transfer three million dollars to an offshore bank account in Panama just hours before his arrest.

Deprived of their luxurious lifestyle, Evelyn and Tessa were forced to check into a cheap, run-down motel on the outskirts of the city.

I received a call from Detective Vance around noon.

"Ms. Vance," Detective Vance said over the phone. "I thought you should know that Evelyn Sterling has been trying to contact you through various channels. She came to the precinct this morning demanding to see her son, but when she was denied, she started shouting threats about 'ruining you' in public."

"Let her try," I said, looking out my office window at the city below. "Does she have any legal options left?"

"None," Vance replied. "The evidence against Michael is overwhelming. The forensic audio team confirmed that the recording from your study captured the sound of the assault perfectly, including his verbal threats to break your other arm if you didn't sign the transfer documents. He’s looking at a mandatory seven to ten years in state prison."

"Thank you, Detective. Keep me updated."

Shortly after hanging up, my assistant stepped into the office, looking hesitant.

"Ms. Vance... there’s a woman in the lobby. She doesn't have an appointment, but she refuses to leave. She says she’s your sister-in-law, Tessa."

I raised an eyebrow. "Tessa? Send her up. But tell security to stand by."

Five minutes later, Tessa stepped into my office. The transformation was dramatic. The arrogant girl who had carved her steak and laughed at my suffering two nights ago was gone. In her place stood a disheveled, pale young woman wearing wrinkled clothes, her eyes swollen from crying.

"Claire..." Tessa squeaked, holding her handbag tightly against her stomach.

"Sit down, Tessa," I said calmly, gesturing to the leather armchair across from my desk.

She didn't sit. Instead, she took three fast steps forward and fell to her knees in front of my desk, tears spilling down her cheeks.

"Claire, please!" Tessa sobbed, clutching her hands together. "Please, you have to help us! Mom and I have nowhere to go! The motel is disgusting! People are looking at us, the press is surrounding the building, and we don't even have enough money to buy food!"

I leaned forward in my chair, looking down at her with a cold, unyielding expression.

"Two days ago, Tessa," I said softly, "you sat at my dining table, ate my food, and laughed while your brother bragged about breaking my arm. You said I 'actually thought I was in charge.' Do you remember that?"

Tessa flinched as if she had been slapped. "I... I was stupid! Michael told us you were trying to steal his inheritance! He lied to us! We didn't know he was hurting you!"

"You saw the cast, Tessa," I snapped, my voice dropping like an anvil. "You saw me unable to use my right hand. You knew exactly what he did, and you celebrated it because you thought it meant you got to keep living in my mansion for free."

"I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!" Tessa wept, burying her face in her hands. "Just tell the police to drop the charges against Michael! If you drop the charges, he can get his accounts unfrozen, and he can take care of us!"

I let out a soft, bitter laugh.

"Drop the charges?" I leaned back, looking at her with genuine astonishment at her delusion. "Tessa, your brother broke my bone because I wouldn't sign over my father's life work. He belongs in a cage. And as for you and your mother..."

I reached into my desk drawer, pulled out a stack of paper, and tossed it down in front of her.

"What's... what's this?" Tessa stammered, looking at the documents through her tears.

"It’s a civil lawsuit," I said cleanly. "I am suing you and Evelyn personally for six months of back-rent, illegal conversion of trust property, and damage to the estate. Every piece of designer clothing, every handbag, and every piece of jewelry you bought using my corporate accounts is being repossessed by court order by the end of the week."

May you like

Tessa gaped at me, paralyzed by fear. "You... you’re taking everything?"

"You came into my home as scavengers," I said, pointing toward the door. "Now leave my office before I have security throw you out into the street."
