Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

By Friday afternoon, the atmosphere inside the Thorne mansion in Cherry Hills was suffocating.

I had arrived under the pretense of helping Chloe pack her overnight bag for the hospital. The grand house, with its high ceilings and cold, minimalist decor, felt more like a mausoleum than a home.

Julian was sitting in his study, the door open, his voice sharp and angry as he shouted into his phone.

"I don't care what the audit says! Find the leak, Richard! If those files leave your office, I’ll ensure you never work in this industry again!"

A loud crash echoed from the study as Julian slammed his crystal glass against the desk.

Upstairs, Chloe was sitting on the edge of the nursery bed, her hands clutching a tiny yellow baby blanket. She was weeping silently, her entire body shaking.

"Mom," she gasped when I entered, locking the door behind me. "He knows. He knows someone is digging into his files. He was furious last night. He... he threatened me again."

She pulled down her collar, revealing a fresh, angry red mark shaped like a thumbprint on her collarbone.

"He held me against the wall," she whispered, her voice cracking with terror. "He said if his reputation is damaged, he’ll make sure I pay for it in the delivery room. He said... he said he’ll tell the doctors I had a sudden amniotic fluid embolism. No one will suspect him, Mom. It’s a known complication."

A wave of murderous rage washed over me, so hot and intense that for a second, my vision went completely black. I had to grip the bedpost to keep my balance. This monster was planning to murder my daughter on the operating table, using his medical authority as the perfect cover.

I walked over to her, sat down, and pulled her into my arms.

"He is not going to touch you, Chloe," I whispered into her hair, my voice vibrating with a terrifying certainty. "I promise you, on your father’s grave, Julian Thorne will never lay a hand on you or your child again."

"But how?" she cried. "His family has run this city for eighty years! They have the police, the judges, the media..."

"They had them," I corrected, pulling back to look at her. "But money and influence only work when people are afraid. The moment they realize Julian is a sinking ship, they will abandon him like rats."

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a secure call from Victoria.

"Evelyn," Victoria’s voice was tense, filled with a sharp, professional urgency. "We have a problem. Richard Sterling didn't go home last night. His wife reported him missing this morning. Julian’s security team must have picked him up."

My heart stopped. "Do they have the ledgers?"

"No, Richard was smart. He mailed them to my private residence before he disappeared," Victoria said. "But Julian knows we have them. He’s panicked. He just rescheduled Chloe’s C-section."

"When?" I demanded, my grip tightening on the phone.

"Tomorrow morning. At 6:00 AM," Victoria said. "He’s bringing in his personal surgical team. He’s moving the timeline up to ensure he has control over Chloe before the warrants can be issued."

The trap was closing. Julian was going to kill her tomorrow, under the guise of an emergency delivery, and then use his wealth to flee the country with the baby before the federal investigation could be made public.

"Vicky," I said, my voice turning to steel. "Get the federal prosecutors. Get the police. We are going to execute the warrants tonight."

"We can't," Victoria groaned. "The federal judge won't sign the arrest warrants until the grand jury convenes on Monday. We don't have the legal authority to stop him from performing a medical procedure on his own wife tomorrow morning."

I looked at Chloe, who was watching me with wide, terrified eyes. She had heard everything.

"Then we don't use the law," I said coldly. "We use his own game against him."
