Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The drive to the Cherry Hills estate was a blur of rain and flashing headlights. I pushed my sedan to its absolute limit, my tires screaming as I tore through the wealthy suburb’s quiet streets.

When I pulled up to the grand gates, they were wide open. A silver Mercedes SUV was idling in the driveway, its headlights cutting through the dark rain.

I slammed my car into park, jumped out, and ran toward the front door. It was unlocked.

Inside, the foyer was silent, except for the sound of heavy footsteps coming from the second floor. I ran up the grand curved staircase, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird.

As I reached the landing, I saw Julian.

He was dragging Chloe by her arm. She was dressed in her pajamas, weeping, clutching her stomach as she tried to resist his grip. A leather suitcase was thrown over his shoulder.

"Let her go, Julian!" I screamed, my voice echoing off the marble walls.

Julian stopped. He turned to look at me, his eyes wild, his hair disheveled. The polished, elegant physician was gone; in his place was a desperate, cornered animal.

"Evelyn," he hissed, his grip tightening on Chloe’s arm until she let out a small cry of pain. "You’ve been very busy this week. Richard Sterling was weak. He told me everything before he... retired."

My blood ran cold. "What did you do to Richard, Julian?"

"He’s taking a long vacation," Julian sneered, taking another step down the stairs, dragging Chloe with him. "Just like Chloe and I are. We are heading to the hospital. My team is waiting. We’re going to deliver my son, and then we are leaving this miserable city."

"You aren't going anywhere," I said, stepping onto the stairs to block his path. "The state medical board has just suspended your license. You are no longer a doctor, Julian. You are a criminal under federal investigation."

Julian laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "A suspension? Do you think a piece of paper from a bureaucratic board stops me? I own that hospital, Evelyn! The staff answers to me, not some panel of retired doctors!"

"They answer to the law," I said, reaching into my pocket and pulling out my phone, pressing a button to activate the speaker.

Victoria’s voice came through clearly. "Julian, this is Director Sterling of the Medical Licensing Board. The Denver Police Department has just entered Thorne Memorial. Your private office is being searched, and your surgical team—Dr. Helen, Dr. Aris, and Nurse Clara—have just been detained for questioning regarding the death of infant patients in the Thorne Biotech trials."

Julian’s face went completely blank. The suitcase slipped from his shoulder, clattering down the stairs.

"No..." he whispered. "That’s impossible. They wouldn't dare."

"It’s over, Julian," I said, taking a step closer to him. "You have nothing left. Let go of my daughter."

For a second, I thought he was going to surrender. His shoulders slumped, his eyes darting around the empty hallway as if looking for an escape route.

But then, a dark, terrifying expression settled over his face.

"If I’m going down, Evelyn," he whispered, his voice dangerously calm, "I’m taking everything with me."

With a sudden, violent shove, he pushed Chloe down the stairs toward me.
