Chapter 6 - The Trap Collapses

I sat in my quiet office for a long time after Arthur left, staring at the blue-bound legal document on my desk.

My father had been a quiet, observant man. He had worked eighty hours a week building his firm, rarely raising his voice at home. I used to think he was weak for letting my mother dominate our household. But sitting here reading his final legal directives, I realized he had seen everything. He had seen my mother’s cruelty, he had seen Rhys’s lazy entitlement, and he had quietly put a system in place to protect the legacy from being destroyed by their greed.

The next morning, I called a meeting at the downtown legal offices of Pendelton & Associates.

When I walked into the glass-walled conference room on the twentieth floor, Rhys was already there, sitting beside Sloane and two corporate defense lawyers. He looked terrible—dark circles under his eyes, his hair unwashed, his designer suit hanging loosely on his shoulders.

Sloane was fidgeting nervously with her heavy gold bracelets, her face devoid of the smug satisfaction she had displayed on Christmas Eve.

They thought they were coming to sign the papers to officially remove me from the family trust.

"Calvin," Rhys sneered as I sat down across the massive mahogany table, accompanied by Arthur Pendelton. "Look who decided to show up. Mom said you were playing the high-and-mighty saint, but I knew you’d come crawling back once you realized how much money you were losing."

Sloane smirked. "It's too late for apologies, Calvin. Evelyn is cut off from you forever. We're taking the full estate allocation today."

Arthur Pendelton cleared his throat loudly, opening his folder.

"Mr. and Mrs. Reed," Arthur said in a stern, authoritative voice. "This meeting was not called to execute a disinheritance of Calvin Reed. It was called to serve notice of an immediate corporate audit."

Rhys froze. "An audit? What the hell are you talking about, Arthur? You're retired."

"I am the designated independent trustee of the Reed Irrevocable Fund," Arthur stated firmly. "And as of nine o'clock this morning, Calvin Reed has formally exercised his rights as primary executor."

Arthur slid a thick ledger across the table.

"Over the past eighteen months, Rhys," Arthur continued, "you have illegally diverted four point two million dollars from the firm’s secondary capital account into an unlisted offshore holding company under your wife’s maiden name. You used those funds to cover personal margin calls and purchase real estate in Naples, Florida."

Sloane turned pale, her jaw dropping open. "That... that was an investment!"

"That was embezzlement, Mrs. Reed," Arthur corrected coldly. "Under the terms of Richard Reed's trust, any unauthorized diversion of capital constitutes immediate forfeiture of all administrative roles and triggers a automatic freeze on all associated accounts."

Rhys leaped out of his chair, his hands slamming down on the table. "You can't do this! Mom is the head of the family! She controls the trust!"

"Your mother controls nothing, Rhys," I said softly, looking my brother in the eye. "Dad made sure of that ten years ago. He knew who you were. He knew who she was."

"Calvin, please!" Rhys panicked, the arrogance evaporating instantly, replaced by sheer terror. "If you freeze those accounts, the Florida lenders will foreclose on the house! The firm will collapse! I'll go to federal prison!"

"You should have thought about that before you stole from Dad's legacy," I said, standing up. "And before you stood by and watched Mom hit my wife."

"Calvin! Wait!" Sloane shrieked, tears springing to her eyes as she reached out across the table. "We were family! It was just a stupid argument on Christmas! Evelyn was the one who hit her, not us!"

"You laughed, Sloane," I reminded her calmly. "You called my wife trailer trash. You told an eleven-year-old girl her art was worthless."

I picked up my coat and turned toward the door.

"The freeze is active as of right now," I told them. "You have thirty days to return the four point two million dollars to the corporate fund, or Arthur will submit the forensic audit to the State Prosecutor."
