Chapter 10 - The True Christmas

Later that evening, after the guests had departed and Rhys had helped clean the kitchen before heading home, the house settled into a peaceful, quiet calm.

Outside, a soft, fluffy snow began to fall, dusting the porch railing and twinkling beneath the streetlights.

I walked into the living room. The fire was dying down into a soft orange glow. Juniper was asleep on the sofa, wrapped in a fleece blanket, holding her plush bear.

Maren was sitting on the window seat, watching the snow fall outside, holding a warm mug of cocoa.

I walked over, wrapped a warm blanket around her shoulders, and sat down beside her, pulling her close to my chest. She rested her head against my neck, taking a deep, contented breath.

"What are you thinking about?" I asked softly, kissing the top of her head.

"I was thinking about how terrified I was driving into Dublin two years ago," Maren whispered, looking out at the peaceful winter night. "I spent so many years feeling small around your family, Cal. I spent so long wondering if I was ever going to be good enough for your world."

I turned her face toward mine, looking deeply into her soft brown eyes.

"You didn't belong in her world, Maren," I said gently. "Because her world was empty. You brought real life, real love, and real dignity into mine. You saved me."

Maren smiled—a beautiful, radiant smile that wiped away every memory of past tears.

"Look," she whispered, pointing out the window.

A male cardinal had just landed on the snowy wooden fence post in our front yard. Its brilliant red feathers stood out vividly against the pure white snow, bright, strong, and completely unafraid of the winter cold.

I put my arm around my wife, holding her close as we watched the bird rest quietly in the snowfall before taking flight into the peaceful night sky.

We had lost a toxic family, but we had built a true home. And as the snow fell softly over our warm, bright house, I knew with absolute certainty that we would never be broken again.
