Chapter 5 - The Sunrise Arrests

"Laura, listen to me!" Marcus screamed through the receiver, background noise echoing off his marble walls—sirens, heavy thumping on his front door, and Kellen shouting frantically in the distance. "We're family! You're destroying everything I built over forty years!"

"You destroyed it yourself when your boot touched my daughter's face," I replied softly.

"I will give you twenty million dollars!" Marcus begged, his pride entirely shattered. "A trust fund for Zuri! Full ownership of the Oak Park estate! Just call the press and say it was a misunderstanding! Say the video was AI-generated!"

"Lawyers aren't going to save you today, Marcus," I said. "And nobody is taking your calls."

CRASH!

Over the phone line, the sound of breaking wood and splintering iron resonated.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! ON THE GROUND! NOW!" roared a stern voice through Marcus’s phone.

"Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!" Marcus shrieked, followed by the heavy sound of a body being slammed onto a marble floor and the sharp click of steel handcuffs.

"Marcus Holloway, you are under arrest for felony aggravated child abuse, conspiracy to deprive civil rights under color of law, and witness intimidation," the federal agent announced clearly before the call disconnected.

I closed my phone and set it on the nightstand.

At 7:30 AM, Victoria Sterling—the legendary civil rights attorney who had recently dismantled a corrupt corporate empire in the city—walked into Zuri’s hospital room wearing a sharp charcoal trench coat.

"Laura Donovan?" Victoria asked, extending a firm, warm hand.

"Yes," I stood up.

"Dr. Lin contacted me at 5:00 AM," Victoria said, looking at Zuri with deep, protective empathy. "I have already filed a twenty-million-dollar federal civil suit against Marcus Holloway, Kellen Holloway, and every single guest identified in that ballroom for intentional infliction of emotional distress and conspiracy to commit child endangerment."

"What about the judge and the prosecutor?" I asked.

Victoria offered a cold, razor-sharp smile. "Judge Vance was stripped of his bench thirty minutes ago by emergency order of the State Supreme Court. Deputy Prosecutor Hayes has been suspended without pay and is currently being processed at the federal holding facility alongside your father and brother."

Zuri sat up in bed, holding her warm cup of cocoa. "Mommy? Is Grandpa going to hurt us anymore?"

May you like

I walked over, wrapped my arms around my daughter, and kissed her forehead softly.

"No, baby," I whispered. "Grandpa and Kellen are going away for a very long time."
