Chapter 7 - Betrayal Among Thieves

The small, cramped living room of Diane Mercer’s rented apartment smelled of cheap takeaway food and stale panic.
Diane sat on a threadbare sofa, clutching a mug of instant coffee, while Brooke paced back and forth across the worn carpet, biting her fingernails to the quick.
"He's been gone for four hours!" Brooke yelled, looking at the clock on the wall. "He said he was going to negotiate a settlement with Claire! Why isn't he answering his phone?!"
"He'll get us our money," Diane muttered nervously, though her voice lacked any of her usual venomous confidence. "Evan is smart. He's a Mercer. He won't let that orphan girl ruin us."
The door kicked open suddenly.
Evan walked into the apartment, carrying his cardboard box. But he didn't look like a victorious negotiator. He looked broken, his eyes empty, staring at the floor.
"Evan!" Diane jumped up, rushing toward him. "Did you fix it?! Did she unfreeze our accounts?! Can I get my Mercedes back?!"
Evan didn't answer. He set the cardboard box down on the formica kitchen counter, pulled out a stack of legal papers, and laid them flat on the table.
"What is that?" Brooke asked, stepping closer.
"It's my immunity deal," Evan whispered, his voice completely flat.
Diane frowned, picking up the top document. "Immunity deal? What do you mean immunity deal? What about my offshore accounts?!"
"The Crown Prosecutor signed off on it an hour ago," Evan said, looking at his mother for the first time. "I surrendered all my rights to Mercer Logistics. I signed an uncontested divorce. And... I gave them the full accounting records for the Cayman Islands accounts."
Diane’s face twisted into horror as she read the bold text printed across the second page: State's Evidence Affidavit of Evan Mercer regarding Criminal Conspiracy of Diane Mercer.
"You... you betrayed me?!" Diane shrieked, dropping the paper as if it were a poisonous viper. "You gave them my name?!"
"They were going to send me to prison for twelve years, Mom!" Evan screamed back, his long-suppressed rage finally exploding into the small room. "Twelve years! Because of your greed! Because you demanded luxury cars! Because you demanded silk clothes and ocean-view mansions! You made me steal from Claire!"
"I am your mother!" Diane roared, slapping Evan across the face with all her remaining strength. "I raised you! I made you who you are! You pathetic, coward worm!"
"You destroyed my life!" Evan yelled back, tears streaming down his face. "Claire loved me! She would have given me everything if we had just treated her with respect! But you had to humiliate her! You had to make her kneel! Look at us now! We have nothing!"
Before Diane could hit him again, three loud, heavy knocks rattled the thin apartment door.
"RCMP! Open up!" a loud voice commanded from the hallway.
Brooke let out a terrified scream. Diane froze, her jaw open, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror.
Evan walked to the door, pulled it open, and stepped aside. Four uniformed officers and two financial crime investigators pushed into the small apartment, holding a federal arrest warrant.
"Diane Mercer," Investigator Harris announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, wire fraud, and federal tax evasion. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the steel handcuffs clicked around Diane’s wrists, she began to wail, a sound of pure, helpless despair that echoed down the hallway of the cheap apartment building.
"Evan! Help me!" Diane sobbed as she was dragged toward the door. "Brooke! Help your mother!"

Brooke shrank into the corner of the kitchen, pulling her knees to her chest, weeping silently, too terrified to move.
Evan just turned his back, staring out the tiny window at the pouring rain, completely alone.
