Chapter 4 - The Counter-Attack

The serve came on a rainy Thursday morning.

Following Arthur’s strategic guidance, we didn't merely file for divorce; we launched an all-out legal assault. We filed a verified complaint in the Chancery Division alleging breach of fiduciary duty, fraudulent transfer of marital assets, civil conspiracy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress against Christopher, Savannah, and Derek.

Simultaneously, Arthur served third-party subpoenas on the financial institutions handling Vance Holdings LLC, effectively freezing every account tied to Christopher’s secret investments.

The reaction was instantaneous.

At three o'clock that afternoon, while I was tending to the rose garden in a rain slicker, a sleek black sedan pulled up to my front gate. Through the iron bars, I saw Christopher step out, accompanied by a tall, razor-sharp woman in a red tailored suit—his high-priced defense attorney, Victoria Sterling.

I didn't open the gate. I walked down the stone path, holding an umbrella, and stood on my side of the iron bars.

“Linda!” Christopher yelled over the patter of rain. “Unlock this gate! We need to settle this like rational adults!”

Victoria Sterling stepped forward, holding out her leather briefcase. “Mrs. Vance, I am representing your husband. The motions your attorney filed today are wildly disproportionate and represent a severe overreach. Freezing my client’s commercial accounts is crippling his ability to satisfy legitimate business obligations!”

“Your client stole marital assets to finance his daughter’s fraudulent business schemes, Ms. Sterling,” I replied calmly through the bars. “Those ‘legitimate business obligations’ are currently under review for bank fraud.”

“Linda, please!” Christopher pleaded, grabbing the iron bars with both hands, his eyes wild with panic. “Savannah is facing criminal investigation because of your lawyer! The police interviewed Derek this morning! You’re going to ruin my daughter’s life!”

“Savannah ruined her own life the moment she forged my signature on a utility contract and stepped into my home demanding I hand-wash her clothes,” I said, my tone ice-cold. “She thought she was invading the house of a weak, subservient old woman who would bow down to satisfy your guilt. She picked the wrong victim.”

“She’s family, Linda!” Christopher screamed, his face turning red. “After eighteen years, doesn't that mean anything to you?!”

“Family doesn't hand you a list of commands at eleven o'clock at night,” I countered softly. “Family doesn't try to steal your mother’s house. You made your choice, Christopher. You chose your daughter’s arrogance over your wife’s loyalty. Now you get to live with the consequences.”

Victoria Sterling pulled Christopher back, leaning close to the iron bars. “If you force this to trial, Mrs. Vance, we will drag this process out for years. We will tie up your trust in discovery. You will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting us in court!”

I smiled—a slow, genuine smile that caused Victoria Sterling to hesitate.

“My family’s trust has existed for forty years, Ms. Sterling,” I said quietly. “It has survived recessions, real estate crashes, and family deaths. It will easily survive your client’s dwindling bank account. Have a pleasant afternoon.”

I turned my back on them and walked slowly up the stone path toward my front porch, listening to Christopher’s desperate screams echoing behind me until the heavy front door closed, sealing out their noise forever.
