Chapter 5 - The Web Snaps

The pressure on Christopher and Savannah intensified with terrifying speed.

Deprived of access to the frozen Caymans accounts, Christopher was forced to pay Victoria Sterling’s massive retainer out of his rapidly shrinking personal checking account. Meanwhile, the creditors holding the defaulted mortgages on Savannah and Derek’s failed Tampa developments accelerated their foreclosure actions, seizing Derek’s truck and freezing their joint accounts.

Exiled from my home, Savannah and Derek were forced to move into a dingy, cheap motel on the outskirts of town—a far cry from the luxury estate they had attempted to conquer.

Two weeks after the gate confrontation, Arthur called me into his office for an urgent update.

“The forensic team struck gold, Linda,” Arthur declared, tossing a thick stack of audited statements onto his mahogany desk. “When Christopher transferred three hundred thousand dollars from your joint savings account in 2021, he claimed it was for an offshore investment fund. In reality, he used it as down payment for a luxury condo in downtown Miami—registered under Savannah’s personal name.”

I leaned back in my chair, taking a deep breath. “So he was funneling marital assets directly into her personal real estate portfolio.”

“Worse,” Arthur smiled grimly. “Savannah took out a second mortgage on that Miami condo using the forged power-of-attorney document we discovered last week. She told the lender that Christopher was her full guarantor with authority over your trust.”

“She used my trust as collateral for a mortgage?!”

“She attempted to,” Arthur corrected. “The lender’s title company flagged the document as suspicious and paused the funding, which is precisely why Savannah and Derek suddenly showed up on your doorstep at eleven o'clock at night three weeks ago. They were running from a federal fraud investigation!”

The puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying precision.

They hadn't just lost an apartment. They had committed bank fraud, realized the walls were closing in, and rushed to my home to establish physical occupancy, hoping to trick the bank’s investigators into believing they lived in a protected multi-million-dollar trust property.

They had planned to frame me, or at the very least, tie my property up in their criminal defense litigation until I was forced to settle their debts just to clean up the mess.

“What happens now?” I asked, my voice deadly quiet.

“The State Attorney’s Office has formally issued an indictment,” Arthur announced smoothly. “Savannah Miller is being charged with two counts of grand larceny, bank fraud, and felony forgery. Christopher is being named as an unindicted co-conspirator regarding the transfer of illicit funds.”

I sat in silence, looking out Arthur’s window at the city skyline.

For eighteen years, I had believed I was living with a man who simply had a difficult, overly demanding daughter. I had swallowed my pride, smoothed over arguments, cooked meals, and kept the peace, blaming myself for not being open enough to his family.

In reality, I had been living with a predator and his pampered apprentice, who saw my quiet life and my parents’ hard-earned home as nothing more than a bank vault waiting to be picked.

“Serve the final divorce terms, Arthur,” I said, standing up. “No settlements. No compromises. We go to court.”
