Chapter 4 - The Price of Loyalty

By midnight, the storm had passed, leaving Chicago cold, damp, and unforgiving. I was sitting in the dark living room of the brownstone, a bottle of macallan halfway empty on the coffee table, when the front door security system chimed.

I stood up quickly, a desperate surge of hope rising in my chest. "Callie?"

The door opened, but it wasn't Callie. It was Vanessa.

She walked in, wearing a long mink coat, her eyes wide with a mixture of anger and panic. She didn't look like the poised, seductive woman from L’Orangerie. She looked frantic.

"Dominic, what the hell is happening?" she demanded, throwing her designer bag onto the sofa. "My building manager just called me. There are federal agents outside the Gold Coast penthouse. They have a warrant to seize the property records! They’re asking questions about the leasing structure!"

I looked at her, and for the first time, the illusion was completely gone. I didn't see a prize or an escape. I saw the physical manifestation of my own ruin.

"Callie leaked the files," I said, my voice dead and flat. "She exposed the shell company. The firm has suspended me. The SEC is coming, Vanessa. And so is the Department of Justice."

Vanessa froze, her face turning pale beneath her makeup. "What do you mean, the firm suspended you? What about the penthouse? What about my allowance? Dominic, my name is on the secondary occupancy lease! Am I going to get dragged into a federal investigation?"

"Is that all you care about?" I asked, a bitter laugh escaping my throat. "Your allowance? Your apartment? My career is over. My wife is gone with my child. And you're worried about your lease?"

"Don't you dare play the victim with me, Dominic Reed!" Vanessa hissed, stepping close to me, her voice sharp as a razor. "You told me you had this under control! You told me your wife was a mouse who didn't know a stock from a bond! You brought me into this double life, you signed the papers, you used corporate money to buy my discretion! If you think I’m going to prison or going broke for your stupidity, you are completely insane."

She grabbed her bag from the couch, glaring at me with utter contempt. "I’m calling my own lawyers. And if they ask me about those offshore accounts, I’m going to tell them exactly what happened: that I was an innocent bystander who trusted a wealthy senior partner. Have a nice life, Dominic."

She turned on her heel and stormed out, the heavy front door slamming shut behind her.

I stood alone in the dark house, the silence rushing back in to fill the void. Vanessa hadn't loved me. She had loved the lifestyle I subsidized. The realization was a brutal, humiliating slap in the face. I had traded a woman of pure gold for a woman who was nothing but gold leaf over cheap metal.

I picked up my phone and dialed Callie's number for the fiftieth time.

“The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”

She hadn't just blocked me. She had erased her digital footprint from my life entirely.
