Chapter 5 - The Legal Inferno

The next morning, I woke up on the living room sofa, my head pounding from the alcohol and lack of sleep. The bright morning sun streamed through the windows, mocking my misery.

By 9:00 a.m., I was sitting in the high-rise offices of Vance, Sterling & Associates, facing Robert Vance, Marcus's older brother and one of the most ruthless defense attorneys in the Midwest.

Robert reviewed the documents Callie’s legal team had filed. He flipped through the pages with a slow, methodical rhythm that felt like a countdown to an execution.

"Your wife is represented by Eleanor Vance-Vaughn," Robert said, closing the folder.

I winced. Eleanor Vance-Vaughn was a legendary family law attorney known as the "Black Widow" of Chicago divorce court. She didn't settle out of court unless her clients received ninety percent of everything.

"What are my options, Robert?" I asked, rubbing my temples.

"In the divorce? Virtually none," Robert said brutally. "She has ironclad proof of marital asset dissipation. You spent close to two million dollars of community property on your mistress over four years. In the state of Illinois, the court will force you to reimburse the marital estate for every dime of that before they even begin dividing the remaining assets."

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. "But the divorce is the least of your problems, Dominic. The leaked documents show a clear pattern of tax evasion and corporate fraud. By routing your mistress's lifestyle through Reed & Parker’s client entertainment accounts, you filed fraudulent corporate tax returns. The US Attorney’s office is already assembling a grand jury."

"Can we fight the leak? It was obtained illegally from my private files!" I said, grasping at straws.

"It wasn't obtained illegally," Robert countered. "Your wife was a co-signatory on the master digital vault. She had legal access to the data. What she did with it might violate corporate confidentiality agreements, but Reed & Parker isn't going to sue her. Why? Because she gave them a clean out to fire you and save their own skins. They're going to cooperate with the feds and dump all the blame on you."

"So what do I do?" I felt a bead of sweat roll down my neck.

"You offer a total surrender to your wife," Robert said flatly. "You give her the brownstone, you give her the liquid accounts, you agree to her custody terms without a fight. You do this immediately, before the federal indictment comes down. If you fight her in the divorce court, Eleanor will drag your name through the mud every single day, giving the federal prosecutors more ammunition. You need Callie to sign off on a civil settlement so we can focus entirely on keeping you out of a federal penitentiary."

"Give her everything?" I whispered. "Everything I built?"

"You didn't build it alone, Dominic. You built it while she kept your home, supported your career, and trusted your lies," Robert said, his voice devoid of sympathy. "And right now, your survival depends on her mercy. A commodity you have severely depleted."
