Chapter 4 - The Silent Trap

At 6:30 p.m., Nathan and I entered the high-rise offices of Sterling & Croft, the accounting firm that had managed the Whitmore Foundation’s books for thirty years.
Arthur Sterling, a white-haired man in his late sixties who had been my father's closest financial advisor, looked surprised when his secretary ushered us into his corner office without an appointment.
"Owen?" Arthur stood up, reaching across his heavy oak desk to shake my hand. "This is unexpected. I thought you were busy preparing for tomorrow’s gala."
"Arthur," I said, sitting down opposite him while Nathan remained standing near the door. "I'm here to talk about the thirty-five million dollars Trevor is planning to transfer out of the foundation trust tomorrow morning."
Arthur’s hand froze as he reached for a pen. He looked at me nervously, clearing his throat. "Owen... I'm not sure what you're referring to. Trevor presented a board-approved resolution last week authorizing an international development grant to C&T Global Charities in the Caribbean."
"C&T Global Charities is a shell corporation registered to Trevor’s personal attorney in Saint Kitts," I said, laying a printed bank ledger from Julia's flash drive onto his desk. "There are no international developments, Arthur. Trevor is draining the entire foundation reserve to cover fifty million dollars in gambling debts and bad real estate investments in Macau."
Arthur put on his glasses, his hands trembling as he read the ledger lines. "My God... these signatures... Trevor told me your father signed this authorization before he passed away!"
"My father refused to sign it," I said, leaning forward. "Which is why my mother and Trevor forged his signature twelve hours after he died."
Arthur sank back into his leather chair, his face turning completely pale. "If this is true... I signed off on the preliminary regulatory compliance filings! I could be named as a co-conspirator in a federal fraud indictment!"
"You won't be," I said firmly, "if you act right now. I need you to issue an immediate administrative freeze on the foundation’s primary clearinghouse account. Cite an unresolved discrepancy in the board's voting quorum."
"If I do that, Trevor will receive an automated alert on his phone within five minutes," Arthur warned.
"Set the freeze to take effect tomorrow morning at 9:55 a.m.," I said. "Five minutes before Trevor takes the stage at the gala. He won't know the transfer failed until he tries to announce it to the press."
Arthur looked at the forged signatures, then looked up at me with tears of regret in his eyes. "Your father was a good man, Owen. He trusted me to protect his legacy. I... I let those monsters deceive me."
"Then help me fix it," I said quietly.
Arthur picked up his phone, dialed his senior managing partner, and put it on speakerphone. "Jerry? This is Arthur. I need you to place a conditional administrative hold on the Whitmore Foundation clearinghouse portal for tomorrow morning at 09:55 sharp. Mark it under Section 4-B governance audit."
"Understood, Arthur. Hold is logged."
I stood up and buttoned my jacket. "Thank you, Arthur."

"Owen," Arthur called out as I reached the door. "What about your mother? Does she know what Trevor has been doing with the money?"
"She knows," I replied softly. "She helped him do it."
