Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

It was 9:00 p.m.
Twelve hours after I had walked Julia out of the mansion.
I returned to St. Catherine’s Hospital to check on Julia. The hallway outside her room was quiet, guarded by the private security officer Nathan had hired.
I pushed the door open quietly. Julia was awake, sitting up in bed, looking out the window at the city lights below. An IV line was taped neatly to her arm, providing fluids and light electrolytes.
When she saw me, a soft, relieved breath escaped her lips. "Owen."
I walked over, sat on the edge of the bed, and pulled her into my arms, resting my forehead against hers. "How are you feeling?"
"Better," she whispered, her fingers curling into the fabric of my shirt. "The doctor said the baby’s vitals are completely stable. What... what happened with the files?"
"It's all confirmed," I said gently. "The audio, the medical logs, the forged grant paperwork... everything you found was real. Detective Miller has already executed a search warrant on Dr. Kline’s clinic."
Julia gasped softly. "Did Kline talk?"
"He broke the second the police produced the toxicology report," I said. "He gave a full sworn statement admitting that my mother and Trevor paid him eight hundred thousand dollars over the last year to alter my father's medications and to prepare a fake psychiatric evaluation for you."
Tears welled up in Julia's eyes, reflecting the soft glow of the room's monitors. "Owen... your father... I tried so hard to find those papers before he died. If I had just looked in his safe a week earlier—"
"Hey," I interrupted firmly, cupping her cheek with my hand. "Do not blame yourself. You saved us, Julia. You brought out the truth when everyone else in that house was trying to bury it. You were braver than anyone I've ever known."
She rested her head against my chest, her tears soaking into my shirt. "What happens tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow morning, at the foundation gala, it all ends," I said softly. "You don't have to be there, Julia. You can stay here, safe and resting."
Julia looked up at me, her brown eyes blazing with a sudden, fierce determination that took my breath away. She wiped the tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand.
"No," she said firmly. "I'm coming with you."
"Julia, you're seven months pregnant and you've been through hell—"
"They called me a liar," she said, her voice shaking with quiet power. "They put me on my knees on that marble floor and laughed at me while Trevor recorded it. They tried to erase my voice and destroy our child. I am not going to hide in a hospital room while you face them alone."
I stared at her for a long moment, seeing the incredible strength beneath her gentle nature.
"All right," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "We'll face them together."
My phone chimed in my pocket. It was a message from Detective Miller.
Miller: "Kline just turned over his private safe. We found the original, un-forged copy of Charles Whitmore's final will. You were named sole executor and primary trustee of the estate, Owen. Trevor and Evelyn were completely cut out."
I closed my eyes, a cold, unshakeable calm washing over my soul.

The trap was fully set. Every wire was laid, every witness secured, every exit locked.
All that remained was for the curtain to rise.
