Chapter 10 - The Safe Shirt

That evening, the kitchen smelled like butter, vanilla, and fresh rain from the open window. I stood by the stove, flipping pancakes onto a large blue platter.

Connor sat at the kitchen island, his homework spread out, but his eyes were fixed on the pan. "Is that one a cloud, Mom?"

"It’s definitely a cloud," I laughed, sliding the misshapen, fluffy pancake onto his plate.

He took a bite, his face lighting up with pure contentment. He was nine now, growing taller every day, his shoulders broadening into the boy he was meant to be before the world tried to break him.

I leaned against the counter, wearing my favorite old green scrub top—the one Gracie used to call "the safe shirt." I looked out the window at the twilight settling over the butterfly garden. The pain of her absence was still a constant shadow, a quiet ache that would never truly leave my heart, but it was no longer a heavy, suffocating darkness.

It had turned into something else—a fierce, protective light that wrapped around the two of us.

Connor finished his pancake, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, and walked over to hug my waist, burying his face in the soft cotton of my scrubs.

"You smell like soap, Mom," he whispered, holding me tight.

"That's because it's the safe shirt, baby," I murmured, resting my chin on his head as the crickets began to sing in the yard outside.

The trial was over, the monsters were locked away in their iron cages, and inside our little cottage, the door was locked against the world, the lights were warm, and we were finally, beautifully, home.
