Chapter 9 - The Butterfly Garden

Six months later. Spring 2026.

The small rented house was gone, replaced by a cozy cottage with a big backyard in a quiet town thirty miles away from the shadow of Bayside Heights. I had taken a daytime position at a local pediatric clinic, ensuring I was home every single afternoon when the school bus dropped Connor off.

The backyard was full of sunlight. Connor and I were kneeling in the dirt, our hands covered in rich, black soil as we planted rows of milkweed and lavender.

"Look, Mom!" Connor shouted, pointing at a small green sprout breaking through the earth. "The butterfly plants are growing!"

"They sure are, buddy," I smiled, wiping a streak of dirt off his nose, exactly where Gracie used to get it.

He didn't wear the oversized suit anymore; he was in a muddy t-shirt and jeans, his face full of the healthy, bright color of a child who had finally dropped his heavy secret. Mr. Peanuts sat on the porch bench, watching over the yard like a small, stuffed sentinel.

Dr. Carter had cleared him from therapy the week before, noting that his survival guilt had successfully transitioned into a healthy, loving memory of his sister. He didn't have nightmares about juice boxes anymore; he had dreams about clouds.

"Mom?" Connor said, looking at the small wooden marker we had placed in the center of the garden, with Gracie's Spot painted in bright pink letters. "Do you think she sees the butterflies?"

"I know she does," I said, pulling him close against my side. "And she’s probably laughing because we have dirt on our faces."
