Chapter 15 - The Architect's Proof

Mateo Silva met us in a dimly lit diner on the outskirts of the city, away from the prying eyes of the San Alberto elite. He laid out a massive roll of architectural schematics across the vinyl booth, his expression grim under the fluorescent lights.

"You were right, Rodrigo," Mateo said, pointing a finger at a highlighted section of the blueprints. "The municipal council didn't draft this rezoning plan. The Aranda Group’s engineering division did. Look at the digital timestamp on the master file—it was created three months ago, right around the time the rumors about your daughter’s paternity started circulating."

I leaned over the map, my eyes scanning the technical coordinates. My years in corporate compliance allowed me to read the subtext between the lines of ink. "They didn't just plan a commercial corridor, Mateo. They deliberately altered the drainage and flood-risk maps. Look here. By clearing out the San Pedro houses, they are diverting the seasonal runoff away from the Club Campestre golf courses and directly into the lower-income residential valley."

"That’s illegal," Rodrigo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous rumble. "If it rains heavily in August, the entire lower valley will flood to protect the country club’s greens."

"It's worse than illegal; it's a structural crime against the city," Mateo said. "But the municipal director signed off on it last Tuesday. He received a 'consulting fee' from a shell company registered in Delaware."

"A shell company called Alba Properties?" I asked, my heart pounding.

Mateo looked up, surprised. "Yes. How did you know?"

"Because Alba was my grandmother’s middle name," I said, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. "My mother used a shell company named after the woman she despised to fund the bribe that would destroy the neighborhood where that woman's descendants live. Her arrogance is her signature."

I looked at Rodrigo, then at Mateo. "We don't just file an objection to the rezoning. We take this to the independent press. We don't frame it as a family feud. We frame it as environmental racism and corporate corruption. We show the city that the Aranda Group is willing to drown a thousands families just to keep their golf courses dry and punish a rebellious daughter."

Mateo rolled up the blueprints, his face set in stone. "I’ll certify the files, Daniela. I didn't become an architect to build walls for tyrants."
