Chapter 16 - The Press Conference at the Gate

By Monday morning, the atmosphere in San Pedro had shifted from fear to defiance. The three-piece son jarocho band that had played for Lucía’s birthday was back, sitting on the hood of an old pickup truck at the entrance of the street, playing a steady, rhythmic cadence that drew a massive crowd of residents, construction workers, and local activists.
Dozens of reporters from the independent news outlets stood with their microphones, their cameras pointed toward the white-washed brick walls of my parents' home.
I stood at the microphone, flanked by Rodrigo and my father, who wore his clean, pressed work shirt. Behind us, a massive banner hung across the street: SAN PEDRO IS NOT FOR SALE.
"For decades, the Aranda Group has told this city that their wealth builds our future," I spoke into the microphones, my voice clear, steady, and amplified by the community speakers. "But today, we have the proof of what their wealth actually destroys. This rezoning notice isn't a modernization plan; it is an act of corporate retaliation. The Aranda Group has falsified environmental data to divert floodwaters away from the Club Campestre and into the homes of working-class families."
I held up the certified blueprints Mateo had provided, alongside the bank transaction records linking the Delaware shell company to the municipal director's account.
"They did this using a company named after my grandmother, a woman who washed clothes to survive," I said, looking directly into the primary camera lens, knowing my mother would be watching the live broadcast from her pristine terrace in San Alberto. "They thought because we live in San Pedro, we have no voice. They thought because my daughter has the eyes of a Veracruz washerwoman instead of an Aranda heiress, she has no right to this land. But the truth cannot be bulldozed."
The crowd erupted into a deafening roar of cheers and applause. Within minutes, the live stream exploded across social media. The hashtag #SanPedroNoSeVende began trending nationwide.

Across town, the corporate headquarters of the Aranda Group was hit with an immediate wave of panic. By noon, the municipal council issued an emergency statement suspending the rezoning plan pending an internal investigation.
But I knew this was just the beginning of the storm. The Aranda empire was cornered, and a cornered predator is always the most dangerous.
