Chapter 14 - THE ARCHIVE OF SECRETS

A heavy midnight fog blanketed the industrial district on the outskirts of Chicago.
The old Vance-Miller administrative building stood like a dark, concrete monolith against the misty sky, its windows dark, its corporate logo rusted and long forgotten after the firm was dissolved two years ago.
A black SUV pulled into the rear loading bay of the building.
Aaron, wearing a dark tactical jacket, stepped out into the damp air, accompanied by Julian and Commander Ramos. Julian held an electronic keycard and a heavy brass master key that had once belonged to his late father, Arthur Vance.
"My father built this underground vault in 1998," Julian whispered, leading them toward a heavy steel reinforced door at the back of the boiler room. "He kept duplicate hard copies of every sensitive corporate agreement, off-the-books payment, and personal file. He didn't trust digital drives—he believed paper was the only thing you could truly burn if federal agents came knocking."
Julian swiped the keycard and inserted the brass key into a double-cylinder lock. With a heavy, metallic groan, the steel door unlocked and swung open, revealing a long, narrow concrete corridor illuminated by dim emergency lights.
They walked down the corridor, their footsteps echoing against the damp concrete walls, until they reached a spacious, air-conditioned room lined with dozens of tall, fireproof filing cabinets.
"Where are the personnel files for executive directors?" Aaron asked, pulling a tactical flashlight from his belt and illuminating the metallic drawers.
"Section C," Julian directed, walking over to a bank of cabinets labeled 1998–2018 Special Projects. "Cross managed the European shipping routes from 2012 to 2017. Any black-budget payments made to him will be under the codename 'Project Trident.'"
For two grueling hours, the three men worked in absolute silence, pulling thick paper folders from the cabinets, scanning financial ledgers, tax filings, and wire transfers under the narrow beams of their flashlights.
The dust in the room was thick, smelling of old paper, ozone, and decaying leather.
"I found it," Ramos said suddenly, his voice breaking the stillness.
Aaron and Julian immediately stepped over to Ramos’s table.
Ramos laid out a thick, faded blue folder bearing a red stamp: CONFIDENTIAL - DO NOT DUPLICATE.
Inside were dozens of handwritten notes, wire receipts, and a signed private agreement dated six years ago—the exact month Lily was born.
Aaron picked up the signed agreement, his eyes scanning the text beneath the dim flashlight beam. As he read the lines, a cold, sickening sensation washed over him.
"This isn't an abandonment record," Aaron whispered, his voice trembling with sheer horror. "This is a sale contract."
Julian leaned over, reading the signature at the bottom of the page. "Arthur Vance... and Margaret Miller."
"Margaret didn't just find Victor Cross six years ago," Aaron gasped out, his eyes wide with horror as the truth finally unraveled. "She paid Victor Cross two million dollars from the family trust to relinquish his daughter to a private clinic in California. She wanted the child hidden because Cross was threatening to expose my father's offshore accounts using the baby as leverage!"
Julian slammed his fist onto the table. "She didn't save Lily! She bought the child from Cross to silence him, buried the baby in a shelter, and then used the same records six years later to destroy you!"
"It was never about Lily's welfare," Aaron said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper as he held the signed contract in his shaking hands. "To Margaret, Lily was just a piece of blackmail collateral six years ago... and she’s still using her as a weapon today."
Suddenly, the heavy steel door at the end of the corridor slammed shut with a deafening metallic CRASH!
The lights in the vault flickered once and died completely, plunging the concrete room into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

From the other side of the reinforced door, the sharp electronic hum of a magnetic lock engaging echoed through the walls, followed by the cold, muffled sound of a man's laughter.
"Searching for old secrets, Aaron?" a voice called out through the intercom speaker above their heads. It was Victor Cross. "I'm afraid those documents aren't going to help you in court on Thursday... because no one is going to find you in this vault until long after the judge awards me custody of my daughter."
