Chapter 15 - FRACTURED SANCTUARY

The air inside the concrete vault grew cold and thin within thirty minutes of the ventilation system being cut off.

In the total darkness, the thin beams of their tactical flashlights cut through the rising dust. Commander Ramos was standing at the heavy steel door, examining the electronic lock mechanism with a small set of tactical tools, his face slick with sweat.

"The magnetic latch is powered by a secondary emergency battery outside the frame," Ramos reported, his voice tight. "Without a bypass code or heavy explosives, we can't breach this door from the inside."

Julian was leaning against a filing cabinet, running his hands through his damp hair, his breathing coming in shallow gasps. "The air supply in this vault is sealed. In four hours, the oxygen level will drop below safe limits."

Aaron didn't panic. He stood in the center of the room, looking at the blue folder in his hands under the beam of his flashlight. Inside that folder was the absolute proof of Margaret's corruption—the signed sale contract that would expose Victor Cross as a blackmailer and invalidate Margaret’s legal standing forever.

He could not die in this vault. His daughter was waiting for him at home.

"Ramos," Aaron commanded, his voice unnervingly calm and resolute. "Where is the main power conduit for the building's fire suppression system?"

Ramos blinked, looking up from the door. "It runs through the upper ceiling duct above the central filing cabinet. Why?"

"If we short-circuit the master fire alarm system," Aaron explained, pointing his flashlight at the heavy metal junction box mounted near the ceiling, "the building's emergency safety protocol will automatically override all internal magnetic locks to allow fire crews access."

"Short-circuiting a four-hundred-volt industrial box without insulated gloves will cause a high-voltage arc blast, Aaron!" Julian warned, his eyes wide with fear. "It could detonate the paper dust in this room or electrocute you!"

"I don't care," Aaron said flatly, pulling off his heavy leather jacket and wrapping it tightly around his right arm and hand. "Get behind the steel cabinets. Now."

While Ramos and Julian scrambled behind the heavy metallic filing cabinets for cover, Aaron climbed onto the top of the central desk. He reached up toward the high-voltage junction box, holding a heavy steel pry-bar he had taken from the boiler room earlier.

He looked down at his breast pocket. Inside, wrapped in protective plastic, sat the small blue construction paper card Lily had drawn for his forty-fourth birthday: Happy Birthday, Daddy. Thank you for picking me. I pick you too.

Aaron took a deep, steadying breath, his jaw locked in unyielding determination.

"Hold on, Lily," Aaron whispered.

He rammed the steel pry-bar directly into the main copper bus-bar of the high-voltage electrical box!

SPARK! BOOM!

A blinding flash of blue-white electrical fire erupted from the ceiling with a deafening roar! The concussive wave knocked Aaron backward off the desk, sending him crashing hard onto the concrete floor as shower of golden sparks and thick smoke filled the air!

Instantaneously, red emergency lights began flashing throughout the vault, and a deafening fire alarm horn began to blare overhead.

Across the room, the heavy steel door let out a loud pneumatic hiss as the electronic magnetic latches automatically disengaged, swinging open into the lit hallway!

Ramos and Julian rushed out from behind the cabinets, grabbing Aaron under his arms and pulling him up from the floor. Aaron was coughing violently from the acrid smoke, his jacket scorched, his right hand trembling from the kinetic shock, but his eyes were bright and burning with life.

In his left hand, tucked tight against his chest, was the blue folder containing the truth.

"Let's go," Aaron gasped out, stumbling toward the open door. "We have a court date to catch."
