Chapter 13 - The Fortress of Glass

The black SUV cut through the pre-dawn mist as we left the blue house far behind. In the backseat, Emma was wrapped in a plush blanket, fast asleep against her teddy bear. Sitting beside Julian in the front passenger seat, I watched the yellow highway lines stretch out into the darkness like glowing threads.
"Where are we really going, Julian?" I asked softly, keeping my voice low so as not to wake Emma.
Julian’s knuckles were white against the steering wheel. "To the estate in Blackwood Ridge. It’s the original ancestral property belonging to the legacy trust Vivian inherited. When Vivian moved to Oregon, she transferred ownership of the estate into a temporary holding trust—managed by her brother's former law firm. It’s heavily fortified, private, and fully off the grid."
"If it belongs to her trust, isn't that the first place Brooke would look?" I asked, a knot of panic tightening in my stomach.
Julian shook his head, a cold, calculating gleam in his dark eyes. "Brooke thinks she knows every property under the family name, but she doesn't know this one. I seized control of the property’s legal title two weeks ago as part of the asset forfeiture filings from your civil suit. Legally, the estate is now locked in receivership under my firm’s authority. She thinks it's a safe house for her. She doesn't realize we've turned it into a trap."
Three hours later, as the morning sun broke through the grey cloud cover, a massive set of wrought-iron gates appeared at the end of a winding mountain road. Julian pulled up to a stone pillar, entered a secure digital code, and the heavy gates swung open silently.
Beyond them stood a sprawling stone manor surrounded by dense pine trees and high security walls. It was grand, imposing, and completely secluded.
As Julian carried a sleepy Emma inside, I walked into the grand foyer. High ceilings, marble floors, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooked a deep ravine behind the manor. It was breathtaking, yet cold—a physical manifestation of the wealth and arrogance that had fueled Vivian's ruthlessness for decades.
"This is our staging ground," Julian said, setting Emma down on a plush sofa in the adjoining library. He walked over to a bank of security monitors built into a hidden wall cabinet. The screens displayed high-definition live feeds of every square foot of the perimeter.
"Julian," I said, stepping closer to him. "What is the plan? We can't stay on the defensive forever. Running from shadows will destroy us."
Julian turned to me, taking both of my hands in his. "We’re not running, Clara. We brought Brooke’s financial lifeline out into the open. That wire transfer from Aegis Holdings? My associate in Geneva tracked the origin. The account wasn't authorized by Vivian. Vivian was being blackmailed."
I gasped. "Blackmailed? By whom?"
"By Brooke," Julian revealed. "Brooke discovered old financial irregularities from Vivian's late husband's estate—tax fraud and illegal offshore transfers that could land Vivian in a federal penitentiary even in her retirement. Brooke used that information to force Vivian to fund her escape."
I sank into an armchair, processing the revelation. The illusion of the cold, master-manipulator mother-in-law shattered in an instant. Vivian wasn't a criminal mastermind orchestrating a puppet show; she was a desperate, broken woman terrorized by the monster she had raised.
Suddenly, Julian’s desk phone rang. He pressed the speaker button.
"Julian," Chloe’s panicked voice echoed through the room from Oregon. "She called Mom."
"Chloe, slow down," Julian commanded gently. "What happened?"
"Brooke called Vivian's private line twenty minutes ago," Chloe said, her voice shaking. "David was listening in through the wiretap the police installed. Brooke isn't going after the blue house, Clara! She used that photograph on your front porch as a distraction to throw off the security guards!"

My blood ran cold. "Where is she, Chloe?!"
"She knows about the Blackwood Ridge estate," Chloe cried. "She knew Vivian kept emergency bearer bonds in the estate vault! She's on her way there right now—and she isn't alone!"
