Chapter 19 - The Promise

By late summer, Julian’s new law practice, Vance & Associates: Family Legal Advocacy, had officially opened its doors in the town square. He was already taking on cases for women and children who needed a fighting chance against powerful abusers.

My life, too, found a new calling. I began volunteering three days a week at the local women’s shelter, teaching art classes and helping young mothers regain their confidence and independence after escaping traumatic homes.

One Friday evening, Julian took Emma and me out for dinner at a small, cozy Italian restaurant near the harbor. Emma was dressed in a pretty blue sundress, her brown curls pinned back with a sparkly clip, while Julian wore a sharp grey suit that made him look breathtakingly handsome.

After dinner, as the sky turned into a twilight shade of deep indigo, Julian suggested we take a walk along the wooden pier overlooking the quiet ocean.

The cool sea breeze blew through my hair as we walked. Emma ran ahead, chasing the seagulls landing on the wooden posts, her giggles floating back to us on the wind.

Julian slowed his pace, taking my hand and pulling me toward the edge of the pier where the water reflected the bright light of the full moon.

"Clara," Julian said softly.

I turned to face him. The deep love in his dark eyes was so intense it took my breath away.

"When I first met you six months ago," Julian began, his voice low and steady, "you were standing in my office, trembling, terrified that the world was going to take your daughter away from you. But even in your fear, I saw a strength that was greater than anything I had ever encountered in my life."

He stepped closer, resting his hands gently on my waist. "You fought for your freedom. You fought for Emma. And along the way, you gave me a life I didn't know I was missing. You showed me that a house isn't just a place to sleep—it’s the people who make you feel safe."

Julian reached into his jacket pocket and knelt down on one knee on the weathered wood of the pier.

My breath hitched in my throat as tears immediately gathered in my eyes.

He opened a small black velvet box, revealing a simple, elegant platinum ring set with a brilliant, shining diamond that caught the moonlight like a star.

"Clara," Julian said, looking up at me with absolute devotion. "Will you do me the honor of marrying me? Will you let me spend the rest of my life protecting you, loving you, and building our garden together?"

Before I could even speak, Emma came running over, her eyes wide with excitement. "Is Julian going to be my daddy forever?!" she squealed, clapping her hands.

Julian turned to Emma with a soft, warm smile. "Only if your mommy says yes, sweetie."

I sank down to my knees in front of Julian, throwing my arms around his neck, weeping tears of pure, unrestrained happiness.

"Yes!" I cried into his shoulder. "Yes, Julian! A thousand times yes!"

Julian pulled me tight, slipping the ring onto my finger, before pulling Emma into our embrace. Under the glowing moonlight and the gentle sound of the ocean waves, the three of us held each other tight—a complete, unbroken circle.
