Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Vale Manor

The helicopter ride was smooth, a stark contrast to the chaos of the marina. Within twenty-five minutes, we descended onto the private helipad of Vale Manor—a sprawling, secluded estate perched on a dramatic cliffside overlooking the crashing waves of the Pacific Northwest coast.

The estate was a fortress of dark stone, towering glass windows, and warm timber, surrounded by acres of private pine forests and manicured gardens. It was a place designed for absolute privacy and uncompromising security.

As soon as we stepped out of the cabin, a team of waiting medical and domestic staff rushed forward. A gentle, middle-aged woman named Mrs. Higgins, who had managed the household since Adrian was a boy, took Ellie into her arms with practiced tenderness.

"Let's get this brave little princess into a warm bath and some dry pajamas," Mrs. Higgins cooed, brushing a damp curl from Ellie’s forehead. "I have hot chocolate and fresh blueberry muffins waiting in the nursery."

Ellie looked up at me sleepily. "Can Mommy come too?"

"Go with Mrs. Higgins, sweetheart," I smiled, kissing her cheek. "Mommy needs to talk to Daddy for a few minutes. I'll be right up to tuck you in."

Once Ellie and the staff had disappeared down the grand, vaulted hallway, the heavy oak doors of the private study closed behind Adrian and me.

The study was magnificent—walls lined with leather-bound books, a massive stone fireplace crackling with orange flames, and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the moonlit ocean.

I turned to Adrian, the adrenaline of the evening finally beginning to wear off, leaving a deep, exhausting ache in my bones. I was still wearing my ruined, damp party dress beneath his oversized coat.

Adrian crossed the room in two long strides, gently pulling the heavy coat off my shoulders and tossing it onto a leather armchair. He reached out, taking both of my cold hands in his warm palms.

"You're shaking," he murmured, his thumb gently stroking my knuckles.

"I'm just... processing," I let out a breath that was half-laugh, half-sob. "Adrian, what you did tonight... you completely dismantled my family in less than an hour. They have nothing left."

"They have exactly what they earned," Adrian replied, his voice firm, leaving no room for argument. He stepped closer, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me gently against his chest. I rested my head against his shoulder, breathing in the scent of him, letting the tension drain out of my muscles. "Claire, for twelve years I watched you hide in the shadows. I watched you live in a modest apartment, work a normal job, and raise our daughter with quiet dignity while those monsters treated you like dirt. I respected your wishes. I gave you space because you asked for it. But the moment they put our daughter's life in danger? The agreement ended."

I looked up into his dark, intense eyes. "You bought their debt portfolio months ago, didn't you? You knew this would happen."

A slow, knowing smile touched his lips. "I didn't buy it to destroy them, Claire. I bought it as an insurance policy. I knew your father’s greed would eventually drive his shipping business into the ground. I just accelerated the timeline so we could be ready when they finally crossed a line they couldn't come back from."

"My mother... and Lillian..." I murmured, thinking of the sheer terror in their eyes as their social standing vanished into thin air.

"They won't bother you ever again," Adrian promised, pressing a soft kiss to my forehead. "Their accounts are frozen, their assets are under receivership, and their social circle has already distanced themselves from the scandal. Within forty-eight hours, they'll be forced to sell their mansion just to pay their legal fees."

"Good," I whispered, realizing with a sudden, profound sense of liberation that the ghost of my family's disapproval no longer had any power over me. I was free. We were free.

Adrian pulled back slightly, looking down at me with an expression of deep reverence. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

My breath caught.

"Adrian..."

"We got married quietly in a civil registry in Zurich five years ago, Claire, because it was the only way to protect you and Ellie from my corporate enemies while I was consolidating my global holdings," Adrian said softly, his voice thick with emotion. He flipped open the box, revealing a breathtaking diamond and sapphire ring that caught the firelight. "And you've worn a simple gold band ever since to keep up appearances. But tonight... tonight the world knows who you are. And more importantly, you don't have to hide anymore."

He slid the ring onto my left ring finger. It fit perfectly, sparkling brilliantly against my skin.

"Will you marry me publicly, Claire?" he asked, his eyes searching mine with a vulnerability he showed to no one else in the world. "Will you let me give you the life, the protection, and the honor you've deserved since the day we met?"

May you like

Tears spilled over my lashes, but this time, they weren't tears of fear or pain. They were tears of complete release.

"Yes, Adrian," I whispered, pulling him down into a deep, desperate kiss. "Yes, a thousand times yes."
