Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

Back at Vale Manor, the morning sun poured through the massive eastern windows of the breakfast conservatory, painting the hardwood floors in warm, golden light.

Ellie was sitting at the low mahogany table, happily dipping a blueberry muffin into a bowl of warm milk while Mrs. Higgins watched over her with a doting smile. Across the room, Adrian sat at a polished oak workstation, reviewing international shipping manifests on his tablet, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking more like a relaxed husband and father than a ruthless billionaire tycoon.

I walked in carrying a tray of fresh coffee and pastries, feeling lighter than I had in over a decade.

"Morning, sleepyhead," Adrian murmured, looking up as I approached. He reached out, pulling me down onto his lap and wrapping his arms around my waist.

"I'm not sleepyhead, I've been awake since six," I protested playfully, resting my hands on his shoulders. "Ellie insisted we inspect the estate's garden before sunrise to make sure the flowers survived the wind."

"And did they?" Adrian asked, kissing my cheek.

"Every single one," Ellie chimed in brightly, holding up a small yellow blossom she had tucked behind her ear. "Just like us, Mommy!"

I smiled, my heart swelling with a warmth so deep it almost brought tears to my eyes. For the first time in my life, I felt entirely safe. The lingering ghosts of my childhood, the constant fear of judgment, the shame my parents had tried to brand into my skin—it all felt like a lifetime ago.

Suddenly, the secure intercom on the wall of the conservatory buzzed sharply.

Adrian's expression shifted instantly from relaxed warmth to sharp, focused alertness. He set his tablet down and pressed the communication toggle.

"Report," Adrian commanded, his voice hardening.

"Mr. Vale," Marcus Vance’s voice came through the speaker, sounding unusually tense. "We have an urgent situation at the regional perimeter gates. You need to see this."

Adrian stood up immediately, setting me gently back on my feet. "Stay here with Ellie and Mrs. Higgins. Don't leave the main house."

"Adrian, what is it?" I asked, a sudden knot forming in my stomach.

"I'll handle it," he said firmly, pressing a quick kiss to my lips before striding rapidly toward the front security foyer.

I watched him go, an uneasy feeling washing over me. I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the long, winding private driveway that led up through the pine forest to the estate gates.

Three black SUVs were idling near the security checkpoint. But they weren't Adrian's vehicles.

Through the binoculars resting on the mahogany side table, I zoomed in on the gates.

Standing outside the reinforced steel barrier, flanked by two men in dark suits, was my father, Arthur Ellison. But he wasn't looking defeated anymore. He was holding a document folder, and beside him stood a tall, chillingly composed man with silver-rimmed glasses whom I had never seen before in my life.

And in the center of the gatehouse monitor, I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A drone—small, silent, and painted matte black—was hovering just fifty feet above the conservatory roof, its camera lens locked directly onto the window where Ellie was sitting.
