Chapter 4 - The Public Domain

By forty-eight hours after the wedding, the scandal had exploded across California and Colorado high society.

The headline of The Beverly Hills Chronicle was brutal: "THE BRIDE’S BARGAIN: INSIDE THE FAILING MILLION-DOLLAR ESTATE SCHEME THAT SHOCKED BEVERLY HILLS."

The article, written by Victoria Cole after her brief interview with Evelyn, laid out the facts with merciless precision. It detailed how the young bride, Claire Miller, had publicly offered her mother-in-law a small rental unit while secretly orchestrating an illegal takeover of the historic 14-hectare Carter Estate in Aspen for her bankrupt parents. It highlighted the arrest of Richard Miller at the estate gates and revealed that the bride's family had liquidated their own assets to cover astronomical private debts.

In Los Angeles, the fallout was instantaneous.

Claire walked into her boutique marketing agency in West Hollywood only to be called into the managing director's office within ten minutes.

"We're letting you go, Claire," her boss said bluntly, placing a copy of the Chronicle on the desk between them. "Three of our major corporate clients have already called this morning demanding that you be removed from their accounts. They don't want to be associated with someone involved in a high-profile real estate fraud scandal."

"Fraud?" Claire shouted, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edge of the desk. "It wasn't fraud! It was a family disagreement! My mother-in-law is a vindictive, crazy old woman who is smearing my name!"

"Your father was arrested for property destruction at her front gate, Claire," her boss replied flatly. "The police report is public record. Pack your desk. Security will escort you out of the building."

Devastated and humiliated, Claire returned to the Santa Monica apartment, where Daniel was sitting at the kitchen table surrounded by unpaid bills.

"They fired me," Claire spat, slamming her designer purse onto the counter. "Your mother destroyed my career! She spoke to the press! She made me look like a gold-digger!"

Daniel looked up, his face hollow, dark circles ringed under his eyes. "You are a gold-digger, Claire."

Claire froze. "What did you say to me?"

"You heard me," Daniel said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "I spent the last two days reviewing my financial statements. I looked at the bank accounts you had me set up prior to the wedding. You moved fifty thousand dollars of my savings into an account under your mother's name three weeks ago. You told me it was for 'wedding logistics.'"

Claire’s eyes darted nervously around the room. "That... that was an investment! My father was going to roll that into a high-yield asset!"

"My father-in-law is a broke fraudster!" Daniel yelled, slamming his hands onto the table as he stood up. "He owes two million dollars! The bank just froze my line of credit because your father listed me as a co-signer on a loan application without my permission! He forged my signature, Claire!"

"He did not!" Claire snapped, though her voice lacked conviction. "He just... he used your name as a reference! You’re his son-in-law! You're supposed to support this family!"

"I am bankrupt!" Daniel screamed. "Do you understand what that means? My mother suspended my trust allowance! My salary from the firm barely covers the rent on this apartment! I can't afford my car payment, let alone two million dollars of your father's illegal debts!"

Before Claire could respond, the front door opened, and Richard Miller walked in, looking disheveled and holding a thick legal envelope.

"We have a problem," Richard said, ignoring the tension in the room. "Evelyn’s legal team just filed a formal petition in Los Angeles Superior Court. They are freezing all joint accounts linked to Daniel, and they’ve issued a subpoena for my financial records dating back five years."

"They can't do that!" Claire said, turning to her father. "Dad, tell me they can't do that!"

"She’s claiming tortious interference and attempted conversion of trust assets," Richard said, sinking into an armchair. "She claims that our attempt to occupy the Aspen property was an organized effort to depreciate the value of the Carter Trust. If this goes to trial, the discovery process will expose every single one of my private debts. I could go to federal prison for bank fraud."

Daniel stared at his father-in-law, a feeling of utter revulsion settling deep in his chest. He looked at Claire, who was looking at her father with a mix of fear and cold calculation, completely ignoring her husband's distress.

For the first time since he met Claire, the scales fell completely from Daniel’s eyes. He realized that to these people, he was never a husband, never a partner, and never a person. He was merely an entry ticket into a world of wealth he had taken for granted his entire life.

Without saying another word, Daniel walked into the bedroom, pulled a suitcase from the closet, and began throwing his clothes inside.

"Where do you think you're going?" Claire demanded, following him into the room.

"Away from you," Daniel said, zipping the bag closed.

"You can't leave me!" Claire yelled, grabbing his arm. "We're married! You owe me! If you walk out that door, I will take everything you have left!"

Daniel looked down at her hand on his sleeve, remembering how his mother had pulled away from his grip at the reception.

May you like

"You can try," Daniel said quietly, shaking her hand off. "But as you learned from my mother's lawyer... I don't have anything left for you to take."

He walked out of the apartment, leaving Claire screaming behind him, and stepped out onto the streets of Santa Monica with nowhere to go.
