Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at the Manor

The heavy wrought-iron gates of the Carter Estate swung open with a low hydraulic hum.
Claire, standing outside in a bright red coat that was clearly intended to stand out on television, gasped in surprise. Beside her, a cameraman with a shoulder-mounted rig and a microphone reporter scrambled to follow as she strutted up the long, winding cobblestone driveway.
"Keep the camera rolling, Gary!" Claire hissed under her breath. "She opened the gates because she’s terrified of the publicity! We’ve got her now!"
Claire was convinced this was her masterstroke. By framing Evelyn as a cruel, wealthy matriarch hoarding wealth while her daughter-in-law suffered in poverty, she hoped to force a massive cash settlement out of court.
When they reached the vast stone courtyard in front of the main manor, they found Evelyn waiting.
She was not cowering behind security guards. She stood at the top of the grand marble steps, dressed in a tailored charcoal coat, flanked only by Harrison Vance and Arthur. Her posture was regal, her expression impassive.
"Evelyn!" Claire shouted, marching up to the base of the stairs while the camera zoomed in on her face. "You can't hide behind your lawyers anymore! You ruined my marriage, you destroyed my family's business, and you’ve left your own son living in squalor while you sit in this forty-million-dollar castle!"
The reporter stepped forward, thrusting a microphone toward Evelyn. "Mrs. Carter, do you have a response to claims that you are withholding trust funds to force a divorce between your son and his wife?"
Evelyn did not flinch. She looked directly into the camera lens with a calm, unshakeable authority.
"I am not withholding anything that belongs to Ms. Miller," Evelyn said, her voice carrying easily across the courtyard. "Nor am I holding my son hostage. My son is a thirty-year-old adult who made severe errors in judgment."
"You cut him off!" Claire shrieked. "You forced him onto the street because he dared to love me instead of obeying you!"
"I suspended his allowance because he attempted to breach the terms of a sacred legal trust," Evelyn corrected sharply. "A trust created by his late father to ensure this land remains protected from financial predators."
"Predators?" Claire mocked loudly for the camera. "My family is a respected, hardworking family from Pasadena! We came to you in good faith!"
Evelyn slowly produced a thin manila envelope from inside her coat.
"Is this the good faith you speak of, Ms. Miller?" Evelyn asked, holding up the documents. "This is a certified copy of the bank loan application filed by your father, Richard Miller, four days before your wedding. On line 12, he listed this estate—the Carter property—as collateral for a three-million-dollar private loan."
The reporter’s eyes widened, and he immediately signaled the cameraman to tilt down toward the documents.
Claire’s face drained of color. "That... that's a lie! My father would never!"
"Your father forged my son's signature as a co-guarantor," Evelyn continued relentlessly. "He intended to move your family into my guest wing not as guests, but to establish residence, making it legally complicated for the bank to evict them when he inevitably defaulted on the loan."
"You're lying!" Claire screamed, her composure entirely vanishing. She lunged up the first two steps toward Evelyn, but Arthur instantly stepped in front of her, a towering wall of silent warning. "You made that up! You fabricated those papers to ruin us!"
"These papers were provided under court order by the Los Angeles County Prosecutor's Office," Harrison Vance added smoothly, stepping forward. "Your father was arrested two hours ago in Los Angeles on multiple counts of grand theft, bank fraud, and identity theft. I believe your mother is currently being questioned as an accomplice."
Claire stumbled back, her eyes wild with terror. "What?"
"Your game is over, Claire," Evelyn said, looking down at the shaking woman with pity rather than anger. "You brought a news crew here today hoping to shame me into buying your silence. But all you have done is broadcast your own family's criminal undoing to the entire country."
The reporter lowered his microphone, looking awkwardly at Claire. "Uh... Claire, did you know about these fraud charges?"
"Turn off the camera!" Claire shrieked, swinging her arm to knock the lens away. "Turn it off right now!"
"Leave the property, Ms. Miller," Evelyn commanded, her voice ringing like iron. "If you set foot on this mountain again, you will not be escorted out by my security. You will be escorted out in handcuffs."
May you like
Claire stood frozen in the middle of the courtyard, surrounded by the towering pines and the majestic peaks of Colorado, completely ruined, utterly defeated, and entirely alone.
Without a word, she turned and ran back down the driveway, her red coat a glaring stain against the pure white snow.
