Chapter 6 - The Syndicate’s Threat

With Adrian behind bars, a temporary silence settled over my life, but I knew the danger hadn't passed. The contract found in the safe didn't just implicate Adrian; it blew open a multi-million-dollar money laundering pipeline operated by the Lombardi crime syndicate. Victor Lombardi was a ghost in the Boston underworld, a man who had avoided federal indictment for thirty years by eliminating anyone who ever looked at his books.

Three days after the arraignment, I returned to my home in Wellesley to pack up the last of my children's belongings. I couldn't stay in that house anymore. Every corner held a memory that cut like a knife.

As I walked into the nursery, my heart stopped.

The two small wooden cribs had been smashed to pieces. The stuffed animals were torn open, their stuffing scattered across the floor like winter snow. Written in crude, black spray paint across the pale blue wall was a single message:

“CHOOSE YOUR WORDS WISELY AT THE TRIAL, CLAIRE. LOMBARDI DOESN'T LIKE WITNESSES.”

A cold sweat broke out across my skin, but before I could draw my weapon—the small, compact Glock I had started carrying since the funeral—a shadow stepped into the doorway.

"I told you to accept the security detail, Claire," a deep voice said.

I spun around, my gun leveled at the chest of a tall, silver-haired man standing in the hallway. It was David Vance, a senior federal investigator with the Organized Crime Strike Force—and an old colleague from my days at the Attorney General’s office.

"David," I breathed, lowering the weapon slightly but keeping my finger near the guard. "How did they get past the gate security?"

"Lombardi owns the private security firm that manages this entire neighborhood," David said, walking into the ruined nursery and examining the spray paint. "Adrian was just a small fish who got caught in their net because he was sloppy and desperate. But now that you’ve put his contract into the public court record, Lombardi’s entire corporate infrastructure is exposed. They don't just want to intimidate you, Claire. They want to erase you before the grand jury convenes next month."

"Let them try," I said, my voice hardening as I looked at the ruined remains of my children's toys. "They took the only two things in this world that mattered to me. They think I’m afraid of a threat on a wall? I have nothing left to lose, David. That makes me the most dangerous person Victor Lombardi has ever encountered."

David looked at me, a profound respect and sadness in his eyes. "I know you're strong, Claire. But you can't fight a mafia syndicate with a ledger and a hand gun. We’re moving you to a secure federal safehouse in New Hampshire tonight. We’re taking over the prosecution. This is no longer just a local murder case—this is a federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) investigation."
