Chapter 8 - The Syndicate Crumbles

With Sarah Jenkins secured as our star witness, the federal government moved with lethal efficiency. On a Thursday morning, over two hundred federal agents executed simultaneous raid warrants across Boston, New York, and New Jersey, targeting forty-two businesses connected to the Lombardi crime syndicate.

Victor Lombardi was arrested at his luxury estate in Cape Cod while attempting to board his private yacht. The evidence I had compiled from Adrian’s shipping ledgers had provided the missing links the feds needed to track Lombardi’s primary money laundering software—a digital cleaning network that had processed over eighty million dollars in illicit funds over the past decade.

In the federal holding facility, Adrian Mercer found himself completely abandoned. His father’s firm had declared bankruptcy due to the asset forfeitures and corporate fraud indictments. His expensive defense attorney, Arthur Vance, had withdrawn from the case after Adrian’s checks bounced.

I requested a private meeting with Adrian in the attorney-client visitation room just forty-eight hours before the trial was set to begin. I wanted to look him in the eye one last time before the cell doors locked forever.

When he walked into the room, he looked like a ghost of the man I had married. His skin was pasty, his eyes sunken, and he walked with a pronounced limp—a reminder of the reality of jail life where his name carried no weight.

He sat down across from me, the plexiglass barrier between us smudged and scratched. He let out a dry, rattling laugh. "Come to gloat, Claire? Come to see the monster in his cage?"

"I came to give you a choice, Adrian," I said, setting a single piece of paper against the glass. It was a federal plea agreement. "If you plead guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and insurance fraud, the federal prosecutor will remove the death penalty from the table. You will spend the rest of your natural life at ADX Florence—the supermax facility in Colorado. Twenty-three hours a day in a concrete box, completely alone."

Adrian’s lip curled in a snarl. "And if I take my chances at trial? My father still has friends. Lombardi has people on the outside."

"Lombardi was arrested yesterday, Adrian," I said, watching the last remaining spark of hope die in his eyes. "His assets are gone. His men are turning state's evidence to save themselves. And as for your father's friends—they’re currently being indicted by a federal grand jury using the records I found in your logistics safe."

Adrian stared at the paper, his hands trembling so hard he could barely hold the pen the guard handed him. "You really hate me that much, don't you?"

"I don't hate you, Adrian," I said, standing up and pulling my coat around my shoulders. "Hate is an emotion reserved for human beings. To me, you’re just a bad debt that needs to be permanently cleared from the ledger."
