Chapter 10 - THE TRUE VALUE

Three years later.

The sun was setting over the serene, crystal-clear waters of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

The Mitchell-Sterling summer home—a breathtaking stone-and-glass residence designed by Mitchell Global’s top architects— sat peacefully amidst private woods and manicured flower gardens.

I sat on the wooden dock extending over the lake, wearing a comfortable white linen sweater, dipping my bare feet into the cool water.

Beside me sat David, his arm wrapped securely around my waist, his head resting gently against mine.

Playing on the sandy beach nearby was our fourteen-month-old daughter, Sophia, who was happily digging in the sand with a plastic blue shovel while Noah and Lily lay lazily beside her in the warm shade.

My phone chimed softly in my jacket pocket.

I pulled it out with my left hand. It was a brief automated legal update from Margaret Shaw’s office:

Official Notification: Daniel Mercer’s petition for early parole under the First Step Act has been formally denied by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Next review date: 2038.

I looked at the text for three seconds.

I didn't feel rage. I didn't feel joy. I felt absolutely nothing at all—the pure, complete peace of a heart that had moved so far beyond the past that the past could no longer even cast a shadow.

I deleted the text, turned off the phone, and slipped it back into my pocket.

David looked down at me, a gentle, knowing smile touching his lips. “Everything alright?”

“Everything is perfect, David,” I whispered, leaning up to press my lips against his in a soft, deep, unconditional kiss.

He pulled me closer against his chest, wrapping his strong arms around me as the sky turned a breathtaking palette of violet, gold, and deep indigo over the peaceful water.

The grill had gone cold five years ago.

The fire of cruelty had been extinguished forever.

And in its place burned a bright, beautiful, everlasting light—a light built on truth, honor, strength, and a love that would last for the rest of my days.

THE END
