Chapter 5 - THE MIAMI TRAIL

Three days later.

The scene shifted from rainy Chicago to the blazing, humid heat of Miami, Florida.

I stood on the thirty-second-floor balcony of a luxury high-rise condominium in South Beach, looking out over the turquoise expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.

This three-million-dollar penthouse—complete with private elevator access, marble floors, and custom Italian furniture—was one of three properties Daniel had purchased using money stolen from Mitchell Construction’s employee pension fund.

Standing in the living room behind me, holding a glass of champagne, was Vanessa—Daniel’s executive assistant and secret mistress.

Vanessa was no longer wearing her confident corporate attire. She wore a simple jumpsuit, her dark hair tossed into a messy bun, her face pale and streaked with dried tears.

Two federal agents from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division were standing near the front door, cataloging high-end art pieces and designer handbags into an inventory ledger.

“I didn't know, Clara! I swear to God I didn't know!” Vanessa cried, her hands shaking as she set her glass down on the glass coffee table. “Daniel told me he was single! He told me you were an invalid living in an assisted care facility in Illinois! He told me he was buying these condos with his own private investment returns!”

I turned back from the balcony, walking slowly into the air-conditioned living room, resting my bandaged right hand against my silk trousers.

“You didn't know he was married, Vanessa?” I asked, my voice laced with a dry, deadly humor. “Even when you signed thirty-four corporate wire authorization forms as 'Mrs. Vanessa Mercer' over the last eighteen months?”

Vanessa swallowed hard, dropping her eyes to the marble floor.

“He... he told me it was for tax avoidance,” she whispered pathetically. “He said if I signed those papers, he would put my name on the deed to this penthouse.”

Margaret Shaw walked into the room, holding a thick folder of federal cooperate agreements.

“Miss Vanessa,” Margaret said sternly. “The Federal Bureau of Investigation has linked your personal signature to six distinct wire transfers totaling four point two million dollars. As of this moment, you are facing charges as an active co-conspirator in federal wire fraud, money laundering, and grand larceny.”

Vanessa fell to her knees on the marble floor, sobbing hysterically. “Please! No! I have a two-year-old daughter! I can't go to prison! I’ll tell you everything! I’ll give you all his passwords! I have secret recordings of his phone calls with Arthur Vance!”

I walked over, kneeling down in front of her, looking into her terrified, tear-filled eyes.

“Secret recordings?” I asked gently.

“Yes!” Vanessa choked out frantically. “Daniel kept a secondary laptop hidden in a floor safe beneath the master bed in this condo. It has all the offshore account routing numbers, the shell company registry documents in Panama, and recorded voice notes where he and Arthur discuss how to blame you for the missing pension funds if the IRS ever audited the company!”

I looked up at Margaret Shaw. A slow, triumphant smile spread across Margaret’s face.

“Where is the floor safe, Vanessa?” I asked.

“Under the bed... the code is 0-8-1-2... Daniel’s birthday!” she gasped out, grabbing my linen trousers with her shaking hands. “Please, Clara! Help me! Don't let them take me away from my daughter!”

I stood up, stepping back from her grip.

“If the floor safe contains what you say it contains,” I said calmly, “my legal team will recommend a full immunity agreement for your testimony against Daniel and Arthur Vance. But you leave this penthouse today, Vanessa. This property belongs to the workers whose pension you helped steal.”

Ten minutes later, the federal agents pulled a heavy steel laptop case from the floor safe beneath the master bed.

The trap was fully loaded. Daniel’s financial execution was officially complete.
