Chapter 10 - The Celebration of Progress

One year later, the backyard was decorated with bright blue balloons and a massive banner that read: Happy 11th Birthday, Leo!
The yard was filled with laughter, music, and the smell of fresh burgers on the grill. All of our extended family—the ones who had sat in awkward silence a year ago—were now gathered, laughing and chatting happily.
Richard was there, looking relaxed and happy, his kids running around with Leo’s friends from his coding class.
In the center of the yard, Leo stood proudly next to a large, beautifully decorated cake. It wasn't a cake with someone else's name on it. It was a custom-made cake shaped like a classic steam engine, with "Happy Birthday, Leo, Our Chief Programmer!" written in bright gold icing.
Leo stood tall, looking around at the crowd of people who loved and celebrated him exactly as he was. He didn't hide, he didn't cover his ears, and he didn't feel ashamed.
I walked up behind him, wrapping my arms around his shoulders. "Are you ready to blow out your candles, Chief?"
"Yes, Mom," he beamed, looking up at me with eyes full of bright, infinite potential. "My game just reached ten thousand downloads today. I think my train is going very, very fast."

"It sure is, sweetie," I whispered, kissing his cheek as the crowd began to sing. "And there's no limit to where it can go."
As Leo blew out his candles to a chorus of cheers and applause, I knew that our journey hadn't been easy, but every battle fought had been worth it. We had reclaimed our dignity, rebuilt our family on a foundation of love and honesty, and given my beautiful, unique son the world he deserved.
