Chapter 5 - The Glass House Shatters

At four o'clock precisely, Lenora tapped a crystal glass with a silver spoon, gathering the fifty guests around the Victorian gazebo in the center of the gardens.

Grant stood at the center of the gazebo alongside Richard Harrison, the CEO of Blackwood Development, a large, arrogant man wearing a gold watch. On the table sat a leather-bound contract folder.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Grant began, his voice projecting clearly across the lawn. "Thank you for joining us today at Fernwick. For years, this land has been a quiet private residence. But today, we look to the future. I am proud to announce a monumental partnership with Blackwood Development to transform this estate into The Fernwick Luxury Resort & Spa!"

The crowd applauded. Lenora beamed with pride, raising her glass.

Grant smiled warmly and turned toward me, pointing his hand gracefully. "I want to thank my wife, Mara, for maintaining these lovely grounds while we prepared for this transition. Mara, dear, bring the champagne tray over for the ceremonial toast."

Lenora stepped up beside me as I picked up the heavy silver tray laden with crystal flutes. She leaned in close, her voice dripping with malice.

"We’re leasing this $3 million estate today," she whispered sneeringly. "Just serve the drinks and stay out of our way."

I looked Lenora directly in the eyes. I didn't flinch. I didn't raise my voice. I simply smiled, stepped forward, and poured the champagne into the top glass.

"To the future of Fernwick," Grant said loudly, picking up a Montblanc pen and leaning over the lease agreement.

"I wouldn't sign that if I were you, Mr. Harrison," I said softly.

My voice wasn't loud, but in the quiet anticipation of the moment, it echoed clearly across the gazebo.

Grant’s hand froze. The crowd went silent.

"Mara," Grant snapped through gritted teeth, maintaining a fake smile for the crowd. "What are you doing? This isn't the time."

"It's exactly the time," I said, setting the champagne tray down on the signing table, right on top of the legal documents.

Richard Harrison frowned, looking between Grant and me. "Grant, what is the meaning of this? Who is this?"

"This is my wife," Grant said quickly, his face flushing red. "She's... she's just emotional about giving up her garden. Mara, step aside now."

"I don't think she can step aside, Mr. Harrison," a loud, authoritative voice called out from the edge of the lawn.

The crowd parted as Arthur Vance walked up the stone steps, dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, flanked by Chief Deputy Sheriff Miller and two county land surveyors holding orange boundary flags.

Lenora’s face went pale. "Arthur? What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to stop a criminal land grab," Arthur said smoothly, pulling a thick legal document from his briefcase. "Mr. Harrison, the man attempting to lease you this property does not own Fernwick Botanical Estate. He has no legal right to sell, lease, or alter a single square inch of this soil."
