Chapter 10 - THE EVERLASTING SUNLIGHT

Two years later.
Summer had returned to Chicago. The shores of Lake Michigan sparkled under a cloudless blue sky, the warm lake breeze rustling through the leaves of the park trees.
At a quiet, beautiful lakefront pavilion, a small family gathering was taking place.
A long wooden table was covered with delicious food, fresh flowers, and cold lemonade.
Claire sat at the head of the table, laughing warmly as she held hands with Marcus Thorne. Over the past two years, their professional partnership had grown into a deep, respectful, and loving romance—a relationship built on mutual respect, intellectual equality, and absolute trust.
Sitting beside them were two adopted rescue dogs playing happily on the grass, chasing tennis balls thrown by the children of the families hosted at the advocacy center.
I sat on a wooden bench near the water’s edge, holding a glass of iced tea, watching my sister’s face.
She was laughing—a deep, joyful, lighthearted laugh that echoed across the blue water. Her eyes held no fear, no hesitation, no lingering pain. She was completely, totally whole.
Marcus pulled a small velvet box from his pocket, setting it gently on the table before Claire. He didn't make a grand, arrogant scene. He simply looked at her with eyes full of quiet, unwavering devotion.
Claire looked at the ring, then up at Marcus, her face breaking into a radiant, beautiful smile as she nodded her head, pulling him into a soft, loving embrace while everyone at the table cheered and clapped.
I stood up, walking slowly toward the water’s edge, looking out at the vast horizon where the blue lake met the endless sky.
My phone chimed in my pocket.
It was a routine automated notification from the state Department of Corrections, confirming that inmate Daniel Vance remained securely housed in his cell at the Pontiac Correctional Center, his latest application for parole denied without hearing.
I tapped the screen, permanently deleting the notification folder from my phone, erasing the final digital connection to the past.
The wind blew soft and warm against my face, carrying the scent of sweet rain and blooming summer flowers.
The lies were gone. The cages were destroyed. The shadows had vanished forever under the unyielding, everlasting light of truth.

I turned back toward the wooden table, where my sister was waving for me to join them, her laugh ringing out like music under the sun.
I smiled, stepped across the green grass, and walked into the bright, beautiful future we had built together.
