Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT OF THE STORM

Saturday midnight.
The storm raged across Winnetka, knocking out power lines along Mockingbird Lane. The streetlights flickered and died, plunging the neighborhood into deep, impenetrable darkness.
Rain slammed against the tall windows of the estate. The backup generator kicked in with a low, steady hum, illuminating the interior rooms with dim emergency lighting.
In the guardhouse at the front entrance, Frank—the head of our private security detail—was checking the perimeter cameras on his monitor when a sudden shadow moved across the western fence line.
Before Frank could hit the alarm button, the power to the main security gate was manually cut from the external breaker box.
A figure dressed in dark rain gear, holding a heavy iron crowbar, moved through the shadows of the estate gardens, stepping over the rose bushes, making his way toward the rear glass patio doors.
It was Daniel.
He didn't care about the police. He didn't care about federal warrants. His mind was consumed by a single, burning obsession: to make Claire and me pay for destroying his life.
He raised the iron crowbar and smashed the glass patio door with a deafening CRASH.
Alarm sirens instantly began to blare throughout the house, red emergency lights flashing along the ceilings.
Daniel stepped through the shattered glass into the grand living room, rain dripping from his jacket, his eyes wide and vacant like those of a wild animal.
“CLAIRE!” he screamed above the sound of the sirens. “SARAH! COME OUT!”
He marched through the dark hallway, brandishing the heavy iron bar, smashing vase after vase on the marble pedestals, sending glass and porcelain flying across the floor.
He reached the grand staircase and began stomping up the steps, his boots muddy and loud against the carpet.
“You took everything from me!” he yelled, his voice echoing off the high walls. “Now I’m taking everything from you!”
He reached the master suite on the second floor. The heavy double doors were locked from the inside.
Daniel grinned, a manic, terrifying expression. He raised the iron crowbar and began slamming it against the wooden door frame, splintering the mahogany wood with heavy, violent strikes.
CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!
“OPEN THE DOOR!” he screamed, kicking the frame with his heavy boot.
The wood gave way. The door burst open with a loud bang.
Daniel stepped into the master bedroom, holding the iron bar high above his head, ready to strike.
The room was completely empty.
No one was in the bed. No one was in the closets.
Standing near the far balcony window, bathed in the dim red emergency light, was a single digital camera mounted on a tripod, its red recording light blinking steadily.
Beside the camera sat a small Bluetooth speaker.
My voice came through the speaker, clear and calm:
“Thank you for breaking in, Daniel. The federal prosecutors were hoping for clear proof of premeditated home invasion.”
Daniel froze, looking around the empty room in absolute shock. “What... what is this? Where are you?!”
Below the estate, heavy tires screeched on the wet driveway.
Red and blue police lights flooded through the tall master bedroom windows, illuminating the room in flashing colors. Spotlights cut through the dark rain outside, shining directly onto the balcony.
“POLICE DEPARTMENT! DROP THE WEAPON AND PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!” a megaphone boomed from the driveway below.
Four armed SWAT officers burst into the master bedroom from the secondary service entrance behind the curtains, weapons drawn, laser sights pinning Daniel’s chest in a dozen red dots.
“DROP THE IRON BAR NOW!” an officer commanded.
Daniel looked at the blinking camera, then at the laser sights on his chest, then down at the iron crowbar in his hand.
The last illusion of his power, his control, and his arrogance shattered into a million useless pieces.

The heavy iron bar fell from his hands, landing on the carpet with a dull thud.
He dropped to his knees, raising his trembling hands into the air, weeping pathetically like a broken child as the officers pinned him to the floor and clicked steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists.
