Chapter 17 - The Counteroffensive

Victor hit the ground hard, but scrambled back up, drawing a tactical combat knife. His face was twisted in psychotic rage.

"If I'm going down, you're dying in this hole with me!" he roared, lunging at my chest.

I side-stepped the blade, grabbed his wrist, and twisted it until the bone popped, forcing him to drop the knife. I drove a sharp elbow into his ribs, followed by a heavy kick that sent him crashing into the concrete pillar right beneath the ticking bomb.

00:25... 00:24...

I grabbed the heavy pair of steel handcuffs hanging from Victor’s tactical vest, dragged his arms around the structural pillar, and snapped the cuffs tight.

"Hey! Unchain me! You crazy bitch, unchain me!" Victor shrieked, struggling frantically against the steel post.

I ignored his screams, turning immediately to the bomb. With twenty seconds remaining, I pulled out my hair clip, jammed it into the manual override tumbler, and gave it a sharp quarter-turn.

The digital timer blinked once, twice... and went black.

00:03. STOPPED.

Silence fell over the vault, save for Victor’s heavy, terrified sobbing.

I quickly sliced the zip-ties cutting into Marcus and Sarah’s wrists. They collapsed into my arms, hugging me tightly.

"I told you she'd come," Sarah sobbed, laughing through her tears.

"You never fail to amaze me, Elena," Marcus gasped, rubbing his bruised wrists.

I turned back to look at Chloe, who was cowering in the corner, her expensive dress torn and covered in dirt, tears streaming down her makeup-streaked face. She looked up at me, no longer the arrogant heiress who had tossed a twenty-dollar bill at me on a dusty road, but a broken, terrified woman who had lost everything.

"Please... Elena... don't leave me here," Chloe whimpered.

I looked at her with cool detachment. "The police are upstairs, Chloe. You'll get justice. The exact kind of justice you gave me."
