Chapter 18 - Trial by Fire

Three months later, the marble corridors of the Federal District Court echoed with the chatter of news reporters and cameras.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a sharp grey suit, holding Noah’s small hand in mine. Beside us sat my parents, Marcus, and Sarah.

At the defense table sat Arthur Vance, Victor, and Chloe, all dressed in orange prison jumpsuits and heavy wrist shackles. Behind them sat Richard, looking utterly ruined, his legal career destroyed and facing accessory charges.

The judge slammed her gavel down, filling the courtroom with sudden silence.

"In the matter of the State versus Vance, Victor, and Associates," the judge announced, her voice stern and unyielding, "based on the overwhelming digital evidence, eyewitness testimony, and recovered financial records provided by Elena Vance, this court finds all defendants guilty on all counts of racketeering, extortion, framing, and attempted murder."

She looked directly at Arthur Vance and Victor. "You are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."

Turning her gaze to Chloe, the judge continued: "Chloe Vance, for your active participation in financial fraud and conspiracy, you are sentenced to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary."

Chloe burst into uncontrollable tears as bailiffs stepped forward to lead her away. As she passed our row, her eyes met mine. I didn't hold hatred or malice in my eyes—only absolute, unshakeable calm. She dropped her head in shame and was led through the heavy wooden doors.

Richard looked over at me one last time, tears filling his eyes, mouthed "I'm sorry," before being escorted away to face his own sentencing.

I looked down at Noah, who was smiling brightly up at me. "Is it all done now, Mommy?"

I bent down, kissed his forehead, and smiled. "Yes, my baby. It's completely over."
