Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

A long, black Lincoln Town Car was parked at the curb beside the playground.
Two men in dark suits stepped out, followed by a tall, thin man in his late fifties wearing a bespoke navy coat and holding a leather briefcase.
It was Richard Vance—Arthur Whitmore’s senior corporate counsel, and the uncle of Victoria Vance, the woman Arthur had tried to force Caleb to marry.
Nora’s face instantly hardened. She stepped in front of Lily, taking her hand, while Caleb stepped forward, positioning his broad frame between the lawyers and his family.
"Richard," Caleb said, his voice instantly dropping into the cold, authoritative tone he used to command in boardrooms. "You're trespassing."
Richard Vance walked across the grass, stopping five feet away. He looked at Caleb with a mixture of pity and calculated annoyance.
"Caleb," Richard said smoothly. "Your father sent me. We’ve been trying to reach you for three days. You changed your number."
"I changed my life, Richard," Caleb said coldly. "State your business and get off this park property before I call the police."
Richard sighed, opening his leather briefcase and pulling out a thick manila folder.
"Arthur is offering a settlement," Richard said, turning his cold gaze toward Nora. "Ms. Hayes, if you sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding your past relationship with Caleb and relinquish any future financial claims against Whitmore Enterprises, Arthur will establish a ten-million-dollar irrevocable trust for the child."
Nora let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Ten million dollars? Arthur thinks he can buy my daughter's silence?"
"It comes with a condition, Ms. Hayes," Richard continued smoothly, ignoring her anger. "The child will be enrolled in the Whitmore family trust, her legal surname will be changed to Whitmore, and Caleb will return to his position as Chief Executive Officer by Monday morning."
Caleb stepped into Richard’s space, grabbing the attorney by his expensive silk tie, forcing the older man to look him directly in the eye.
"Listen to me very carefully, Richard," Caleb snarled, his grip tightening until Richard's face turned red. "If you or Arthur ever approach my family with a piece of paper again, I will personally file a federal harassment injunction against Whitmore Enterprises. And then I will go on national television and detail every illegal contribution your PAC made to Senator Vance's campaign."
Richard’s eyes widened in genuine terror. He swallowed hard. "Caleb... you would ruin your father."
"My father ruined himself the day he decided money was more important than people," Caleb hissed.
He shoved Richard back, making the attorney stumble onto the grass. The manila folder dropped, spilling legal papers across the woodchips.
"Get out of here," Caleb commanded.
Richard adjusted his tie, shaking with anger and humiliation. He looked at Nora, then at Caleb. "Arthur will cut you off completely, Caleb! You won't have a dime left in Boston!"
"I don't need his dimes, Richard," Caleb said calmly. "Now get in your car."
Richard picked up his papers hurriedly, retreated to the black Lincoln, and the car sped away into the Boston traffic.
Caleb turned back to Nora. His hands were shaking slightly with rage, but as he looked at her, his posture softened instantly.
Nora was looking at him with something new in her eyes. It wasn't just forgiveness. It was respect.

"You really meant it," Nora whispered, walking toward him. "You really chose us over everything."
Caleb reached out, taking her hands in his. "I would choose you in every lifetime, Nora. With or without a dollar to my name."
